Healthcare Access Japan may be known for its high cost of living, but this country has a different healthcare system than the United States. In comparison to the US, Japan is known for having the world’s healthiest people and that the life expectancy is longer. The reason may be is that Japan has a universal access to healthcare. This means that everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, has access to affordable medical care. Health insurance is mandatory in Japan. 98.3% of the people in Japan are covered under the country’s statutory health insurance system (SHIS). The remaining 1.7% covers the improverished people under the Public Social Assistance Program (Tikkanen, et al., 2020). There are three types of insurance coverage in Japan: Employer based insurance plan, National Health insurance, and Health insurance for people age 75 years and older. The employer based insurance plan covers employees who work at companies. The National Health insurance covers self-employed, unemployed, and retired individuals under 75 years of age. The health insurance plan for people 75 years and over was started in 2008 and it requires people in this age group to be enrolled whether they are employed or dependent....
