Maureen Glover Professor Morison MBI- 4220 02-15-18 Hedgehog or Fox
The hedgehog or the fox is a debate to be had in today’s music and media industry. The hedgehog has the advantage vs the fox and has a better chance to succeed and be a better entrepreneur vs the fox. The hedgehog knows one big thing vs The fox who knows many things. The fox is divided in passion and isn’t professional at anything vs. being okay at a lot of things. Like many professional artist for example Taylor Swift has her own publishing company for her music but its under Sony/ATV company which to say that there is probably a team of publisher helping her get her music in tv, radio and films. Which Taylor Swift reminds me of the hedgehog because she knows how to write and preform songs, but no all the business behind it and therefore she hires her weakness vs her strength. This reminds me of the hedgehog concept and the circles. Taylor Swift is deeply Passionate about music, She can sing, write and play the guitar and what drives her economic engine? I believe it’s being singed to a label and singing with a publishing house that made her strong. She didn’t worry about getting her music out there, she worried about creating it, which is her strong ability. Then she gets the people who can help manage her brand, and her finances. While many companies work like this and it’s obvious in the Tech industry, You see Steve Jobs. He wasn’t making the computers he was a good sell person and he believed in innovations
and he strived for that, but he wasn’t engineer the technology he had Steve Wozniak to do that for him. In the Music Business I think he looks similar to Apple company in set up. In any record label there is the Founder, theres is the legal department, the business affairs, A & R who repent artist, the promotion department, Artist Development, marketing, publicity department, new media, Record label liaison, sales, art department. To have a good business in the music it is beneficial to be the hedgehog vs the fox.
