MAA308 Mathematical Methods in Chemical Engineering MAA309 Mathematical Methods in Bioengineering Guide to HELM resources The HELM (Helping Engineers Learn Mathematics) project was a £ 14 M project lead by Loughborough University. You can learn more about the project at: http://helm.lboro.ac.uk/ The main learning resources from the project are a series of 50 workbooks, suitable for self-study, that explain all mathematical concepts required by engineering students in a simple way with worked examples. All the workbooks are available free to download by Lougborough University students at: https: //learn.lboro.ac.uk/archive/olmp/olmp_resources/pages/wbooks_fulllist.html Not all the workbooks are relevant for this module. The ones that contain material that we study are listed below. If there are particular areas that you have found difficult, it is recommended that you download and work through the relevant book(s) or book sections as an additional learning resource. Please remember also to make use of the Mathematics Learning Resource Centre. (Books are presented in the approximate order in which we met the material in lectures, rather than strict numerical order).

Semester One Books 1–4 Basic algebra and revision of A-level material. Book 6 Exponential and logarithm functions (includes hyperbolic functions, sinh, cosh, et cetera ). Book 10 Complex numbers. Books 11,12 Differentiation and applications of differentiation. Book 18 Partial derivatives and stationary points of functions of more than one variable. Book 16 Sequences and series, including Taylor and MacLaurin series.
