Primary Source Hunt 2-1 Emily Hicks HIS-100 Professor Jim September 9, 2019

2-1 Primary Source Hunt 1. Describe your overall experience locating these primary sources. Was it challenging or straightforward? Do you learn anything interesting along the way? Searching for Primary Sources was moderately straightforward after learning a lot of the primary sources to search for in the overview. I found the Atomic Heritage Foundation more difficult to research for my primary sources, but only at first. This was because all of the information seemed overwhelming and hard to find what I was seeking. The Truman Library Collections was easy, efficient, and well organized for searching through. Yes, I learned something new. I live in one of the three states that have a department left from the Manhattan Project is the new information that I learned. Tennessee, Washington, and New Mexico all have sites with Federal Properties to the Department of Energy. 2. Were you able to locate an interview with Tom Evans, a close friend of President Truman’s, who interacted with scientists who were trying to reach Truman with their campaign against the use of the atomic bomb? Share your search terms and a link to the primary source. Yes, in the first one called Truman Library Collections. I looked under the Student Research File in the Education section but I backed out of that. Then I searched Tom Evans and in the search by content part I clicked the oral history box and several interviews with Tom Evans came up. The link is https://www.trumanlibrary.gov/library/oral-histories/evans1. Then I clicked the section that had another list of interviews. The link is

https://www.trumanlibrary.gov/library/oral-histories/evans. On this link, there is actually a convenient list of the subjects discussed in alphabetical order. 3. Were you able to locate a petition against the use of the atomic bomb circulated by Leo Szilard directed toward President Truman? Share your search terms and a link to the primary source. Yes, on the Atomic Heritage Foundation website. The search was pretty straightforward. I put Leo Szilard’s name on the search section and it was the fourth one to show up. The link is https://www.atomicheritage.org/key-documents/szilard-petition. 4. Were you able to locate an interview with Lilli Hornig, a scientist who signed Szilard’s petition against the use of the atomic bomb? Share your search terms and a link to the primary source. Yes, on the Voices of the Manhattan Project website. I just searched her name, Lilli Hornig, on the site and easily found it. The link is https://www.manhattanprojectvoices.org/oral-histories/lillihornigs-interview....
