Histology of the Penis consists of paired corpus cavernosa & a corpus spongiosum of urethra-seminal duct o Terminates with glans penis Corpus cavernosa: covered by tunica albuginea Urethral corpus spongiosum has thin tunica albuginea Corpus cavernosa: erectile tissue that contain irregular vascular spaces lined by continuous layer of endothelial cells o These spaces are separated from each other by trabeculae of connective tissue & smooth muscle During erection, vascular spaces fill w/ blood as a result of parasympathetic impulses which constrict atrio-venous shunts & dilate helicine arteries hence increase blood flow to vascular spaces of both corpus cavernosa & corpus spongiosum single mass of erectile tissue In corpus cavernosum we may see helicine arteries In corpus spongiosum we may see urethral glands of Littre secrete pre-ejaculatory mucus into prostatic urethra Glans penis – the dilated distal end of corpus spongiosum o Dense connective tissue & longitudinal muscle fibers o Covered by retractable skin; prepuce which is lined by stratified squamous (lightly) keratinising epithelium Sympathetic stimulation constricts vessels, giving flaccidity to the penis...
