History of Advertising Starting from 16th and 17th century, which is before ‘La Gazette’ the first classified newspaper ads got published, the printing of domestic news was banned by a government and people had copied the news report into their personal diaries. Before the advent of ‘La gazette’ most news was also circulated as hand written papers. The use of newspaper is to disseminate information and also controlling the amount of information o be disseminated into powerful media or propagation. From the year 1729, person named Benjamin Franklin had published the Pennsylvania Gazette in the Philadelphia which also comes with the ‘new advertisement’ pages. Many publications banned advertisement and only allow limited column width. However, by the year 1870, the number of ads grows rapidly and the ads was simply present as a simple lined of text describing the specification of selling objects or products. Later on, those advertisements had become so numerous that it had to be classified certain categories as products was also increases and advertisements became more sophisticated. Besides, engraved images were also customised for each client and selections for the products could also be made from stock images. Other than that, early advertiser also used much more easy and simpler approach to sell their products and promote their advertisements. They basically convince their customers and buyer of the quality of the product by using illustrations and testimonies. After that, seller also claims to gave away to reward the buyer with success, popularity and romance.

Next is the advertising agents. The person named Volney Palmer which born on 1799 and died in 1864, sit he one that opened the first ‘advertising agency’ in Philadelphia in 1841. He bought a large amounts of space in various newspaper with a discounted rate and then resold the space with a higher rates to advertisers. In addition, N.W Ayer & Son is an agency formed by 21 years od Francis Wayland Ayer after his father, N.W Ayer. It was told that I was acquired from the Palmer’s agency and form the first ‘full service agency’ which is assumed for the responsibility in advertising design and content. They also introduced an ‘open contract’ in term with 15% commission. In the year 1892, they also develop writers and artists to work together as a team in the creative terms. Soon in 1889, the first agency had hired art

director and established a separate department that was devoted to the composition and design of advertisement. The agency was then closed in 1973. For the understanding the sciences of advertising, it was described in the psychology in advertising. In the year 1800’s, an experimental psychologist had began to study the mental processes that was involved in advertising. It was told that the consumer was a non-rational and a suggestible creature under the hypnotic influence of the advertising copywriter. Walter Dill Scott born is 1869 and died in 1955 is a professor and also a psychologist. He questioned consumers about their reaction to various advertisement and in the beginning of market research. He also declared the successful advertiser must carefully study psychology either personally or through their advertising department. They also need to understand how human mind acts and know what repels and what attracts. Moreover, they also need to know what will create and interest and what will fall flat. Overall, they need to study the human nature and must know the laws of the human mind.

In the evolution of advertising in the U.S, outdoor advertising was rampant by the mid-19th century. A job printer who undertook all works other than books and newspapers was a significant presence at the beginning of the 19th century. With the direction and advice from the client, the printer had choose the type style and ornaments from a high variety that was available and organised all of the elements by themselves. There’s also an idea of designing as a separate activity from making to a new profession. Historians who view graphic design as a part of the printing history have often resorted the analogy in explaining the origins of the professional graphic designers....
