HISTORY of SHAMPOO Interestingly, India and its rich literal culture were critical in coining the term ‘shampoo’. Turns out the word entered the English language from the Indian subcontinent during the colonial era. It is derived from the Hindi word ‘champo’, which itself is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘chapayati’ which means ‘to soothe’. The History of Soap The first shampoo/soap was found to have been made in the third millennium BCE. It was found in Babylonian courts and was made of boiled animal fats and ashes. 

Hair washing in the Middle Ages People in the middle Ages would wash their hair by stripping to waist down and dipping their hair in a large, shallow bowl that was set on the ground in front of them with soap. This primitive version of shampoo was not only very irritating to the eyes but also did not clean well. Hair after it was washed was left with a dull look to it.

Dean Mahomet Introduces "Shampooing" to the Western World Dean Mahomet was one of the first Indian writers to write and publish an English book. He brought the idea of the word "shampoo" and the concept of "shampooing" which comes from the Hindi word "champo".It was because of him that this concept began to be used extensively in the west. 

OCT 7, 1903 Hans Schwarzkopf Creates the First Powder Shampoo

Hans Schwarzkopf is tired of the harsh chemicals and oils that were in shampoos during this time and decides to remedy this. He creates the first "powder shampoo" or as we would know it today dry shampoo. 

OCT 7, 1927 Hans Schwarzkopf's Creates Own Version of Liquid Shampoo

After the success of the powder shampoo, Hans Schwarzkopf's company creates their own version of liquid shampoo. It is so popular and the demand was so high that it prompts the creation of the first hairdressing training center. This center was called Schwarzkopf Institute of Hair Hygiene.

Advantage of shampoo 1. Shampoo keeps hair silky and smooth. 2. The shampoo foam is pleasing. 3. Keeps dirt, dust, oil and pollutants away. 4. Shampoo is easy to rinse. 5. There is minimum skin and eye irritation. 6. It gives a thick and creamy feeling. 7. Pleasant fragrance is imparted. 8. Is less toxic. 9. It is biodegradable. 10. It is slightly acidic. . 11. Causes less damage to hair.

Disadvantages of shampoo. 1. Sodium laureth sulfate is commonly used in shampoos which may harm eyes and skin and may even be carcinogenic. 2. Use of ethylene oxide with sodium laureth sulfate may result in 1, 4dioxane is said to be carcinogenic. 3. Continuous exposure to this can cause headache and vertigo and soreness inthe eyes, nose, throat and lungs. 4. There is an additional ether chain which is an inexpensive cleaning agent; it may result in severe scalp discomfort and also loss of hair. 5. The nitrogen based SLES can be carcinogenic and can lead top irritability, skin rash and other allergic symptoms. 6. The use of SLES decreases new hair growth and extends hair loss period. 7. The existence of SLES in hair might worsen follicles of hair increase scalp related problems....
