OVERVIEW Course Description

Introduces students to the study of nutrition including nutrients, requirements, food sources and food selection guides. It covers some aspects of food legislation, as well as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals, recommended dietary intakes, and nutrition as a contributor to health.

Requisites

This course has similarities to NUDI1000. If you have successfully completed NUDI1000 you cannot enrol in this course. This course is not intended for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Course Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe role of food and diet in good health and wellbeing 2. Critically appraise sources of nutritional information 3. Understand Australian nutrition education tools 4. Be aware of safe and sustainable food practices

Course Materials

There is no prescribed textbook for this course. There are many reputable nutrition text books in the library that you can utilise. Make sure you select ones that are Australian. There are a number of course readings that you can access through the Blackboard site. These are arranged as relevant to each module of learning. Each of the modules include a variety of online, website and video links designed to assist you in your learning.

The mark for an assessment item submitted after the designated time on the due date, without an approved extension of time, will be reduced by 10% of the possible maximum mark for that assessment item for each day or part day that the assessment item is late. Note: this applies equally to week and weekend days.

Written Assignment This assignment is a written task with multiple questions/activities to complete. The word limit is 1000-1500 words excluding references and appendices. Students will have access to the assessment task from the end of week 2 of the course.

Assessment 2 - Online MCQ Tests Assessment Type

Repeat (7) online multiple-choice question (MCQ) quizzes (cumulative) at the completion of all modules except module 5.

Description

7 online MCQ quizzes. There are 10 MCQ per quiz. The questions are randomly ordered. The quiz is open for you for 15 minutes. You can only attempt the quiz once. There is a table of module availability on the HLSC1200 Blackboard site under the course outline tab.

Weighting

70% of the final grade for this course.

Due Date

Progressive (no specified due date), at the completion of each module of work, with the exception of module 5 which has no quiz. All quizzes to be completed by Friday 8th November

Marks are available in Grade Centre immediately. Correct answers to all quizzes is provided at the end of the semester after course is closed.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Grading Scheme This course is graded as follows: Range of Grade Description Marks 85-100 High Outstanding standard indicating comprehensive knowledge Distinction and understanding of the relevant materials; demonstration of (HD) an outstanding level of academic achievement; mastery of skills*; and achievement of all assessment objectives. 75-84 Distinction Excellent standard indicating a very high level of knowledge (D) and understanding of the relevant materials; demonstration of a very high level of academic ability; sound development of skills*; and achievement of all assessment objectives. 65-74 Credit Good standard indicating a high level of knowledge and (C) understanding of the relevant materials; demonstration of a high level of academic achievement; reasonable development of skills*; and achievement of all learning outcomes. 50-64 Pass Satisfactory standard indicating an adequate knowledge and (P) understanding of the relevant materials; demonstration of an adequate level of academic achievement; satisfactory development of skills*; and achievement of all learning outcomes. 0-49 Fail Failure to satisfactorily achieve learning outcomes. If all (FF) compulsory course components are not completed the mark will be zero.
