Summary

1 of 3 homework assignments for the course covering force, momentum, speed, and constant velocity. Newton's third law and gravity are also covered...

Description

Homework Assignment #1 1. Two politicians have the same mass and speed. One travels to the left and the other to the right. Do these objects have the same momentum? These objects do not have the same momentum. The reason being that momentum is a vector quantity, meaning that it has direction and magnitude. The magnitude of the object’s momentum is the same, but the direction is not. Therefore, the objects do not have the same momentum. 2. Can a car travel on a circular track at constant velocity? In theory yes. Newton’s First Law states that an object moves with a constant velocity unless it experiences an external force. In an isolated system without any friction this would be possible, however, realistically the car would need to overcome the force of friction.

3. A box on a horizontal table is subjected to a force of 5 newtons to the left. It remains stationary. Are there any other forces on the box?

-

The force of gravity exerts a downward force on the box The table exerts an upward normal force on the box The normal force and the force of gravity are equal but opposite The action force exerts 5 newtons of force onto the box to the left The force of friction exerts an equal force of 5 newtons to the right...
