How does coral photosynthesize? Most corals contain photosynthetic algae, called zooxanthellae, which lives in their tissue. “The coral provides the algae with a protected environment and compounds they need for photosynthesis.” (Zooxanthellae) Then the algae produces oxygen and helps the coral to remove wastes. “Most importantly, zooxanthellae supply the coral with glucose, glycerol, and amino acids, which are the products of photosynthesis. (Zooxanthellae) The relationship between the algae and coral polyp facilitates a tight recycling of nutrients in nutrient-poor tropical waters. The importance of coral reefs. Coral reefs provides habitats for a huge variety of plants and animals. An example of this would be clown fish. “Our structures helps slow down and shrink waves as they hurdle towards shore, which helps protect coastlines from hurricanes, cyclones, and tsunamis.” (Wildlife) Coral reefs also provide services for a number of coastaldwelling humans by providing food, recreation, tourism, and jobs, just to name a few. Current threats to the coral reefs. Climate changes are always a threat when it comes to the ocean and its habitats. Also, sedimentation and pollution have degraded reefs around the world. “On top of it all, the ocean is acidifying due to increased carbon dioxide, making it harder and harder for us to build the physical structure of the reef.” (Wildlife) There are people who help rebuild the reefs and help to replenish the number of coral reefs. One-way people help to do this is to make coral reef nurseries.
