Recruitment and Selection Report for Elite Structural Designs Context: Elite Structural Designs is an Australian based engineering firm licensed for commercial, industrial and residential projects. Twenty years in the business, Elite structural designs have provided structural engineering services in the Sydney region with licensed professional engineers. This company maintains an exceptional reputation by producing quality engineering expertise to our clients. Elite Structural Designs are seeking to expand in search of new motivated and passionate workers to join our remarkable team. Teyah Ronayne, our Executive Engineering Manager oversees our main projects working on a daily basis, directing the team to achieving their goals. Teyah will take in 3 structural engineers at a time dependent on the projects and funds available. The position as a structural engineer will generally take up to 4 years before moving up to a higher position based on experience and performance. Teyah will recruit at least 2 structural engineers every 2 years due to demand and availability. Job Description: Refer to Attachment 1. Selection Criteria Key Criteria: 1. Qualification of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in structural Engineering. 2. Minimum of 3-4 years’ experience in a Structural civil engineering position. 3. Highly developed skills in accuracy, IT and mathematical/analytic problem-solving skills. 4. Demonstrates strategic time management to meet deadlines of projects. 5. Strong negotiation and verbal communication skills when dealing with team members and clients/stakeholders. 6. Demonstrates innovative skills to design new project plans. Desirable Criteria: 1. Experienced in modern structural design software applications. 2. Demonstrates knowledge of current Australian Structural Design and Building Standards and Codes.

Recruitment strategy and advertising/recruitment plan and budget Elite Structural Design’s strategy for recruitment will consist of online recruiting. Online recruiting can cover a large percentage of applicants. Placing vacancy announcements is more effective and economical than traditional forms of advertising. We will target skilled and professionalised specifically in structural engineering. There will be one vacancy available and will expect 100-150 applicants to initiate our selection process. Out of the targeted applicants, there is an expectation that over 75% will be highly experienced and qualified structural engineers. Our advertisement will be online for a period of one month using a range of job searching platforms such as: LinkedIn, Indeed, Seek, Glassdoor. These services will allow to search by job position. The Wonderlic test will be sent via email directly to applicants. Those that are successful to the cut off score will get reference checked by the HR department producing data to potentially reduce levels of bias. The selected candidates after the cut off score will be assessed by work sample test of workplace scenarios and roleplay determining their responses to different situations and interpersonal skills. Finally, a one-hour structured interview conducted by engineer manager, Teyah. The estimated cost of using all job searching platforms will be $895 for one month. Draft Recruitment Position: Full-time Structural Civil Engineer Salary: 100k+ (negotiable) Elite structural designs have been creating innovative designs for up and coming projects for over 20 years in the regional Sydney. We are seeking a self-motivated professional Structural Engineer who has a passion for construction and problem-solving skills. This role is of high importance as you will be responsible for projects (designs, goals/objectives), other engineers and construction crew regularly. Key functions include:      

Prepare reports, designs and drawings Consider the strength of construction materials and select appropriately Provide technical advice on safe designs and construction Obtain planning and/or building regulations approval Inspect properties to evaluate the conditions and foundations Manage and create projects

To be considered for the Structural Design Engineer role:     

Qualification of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in structural Engineering Minimum of 3-4 years’ experience in a Structural civil engineering position. Decision making strategy and criteria:

A multiple cut off approach, due to its required pre-existing qualifications. In addition, it will narrow down the applicant pool to a smaller sub-set of candidates who are minimally qualified for the position and is easy to analyse and explain for managers. The cut offs for each stage: 1. The selection of potential candidates – LinkedIn, Indeed, Seek and Careerjet can send out offers of employment to individuals that have met the minimum standards in relation to years of experience and educational requirements 2. Followed by the Wonderlic tests. Where those who are unable to meet the required cut off score of 29 will be disregarded. 3. Remaining candidates will be put into work sample test to assess their personality in different scenarios. Which will put those that pass all of the previous cut offs to be sent to the final interview where the candidate with the top cumulative score will be offered a contract of employment. If no potential candidates are found within the 30 day period, we will expand advertisement on the same job search platforms, plus an additional one for another month. Whilst reevaluating the selection criteria to determine if the selection criteria was overestimated.

Psychometric Assessment A general cognitive ability skills test will be used in this recruitment and selection report. The Wonderlic test will be used to evaluate the potential candidates’ learning and problem-solving skills. The test is available online allowing easy access for applicants. It consists of 50 questions in the duration of 12 minutes. It will cost the company $120 per month for a minimum of three months at https://wonderlic.com. The average score of executives was at 30, therefore the cut off level has been set at 29 which is one standard unit of measurement below the executives’ average scores. This cognitive ability test allows the company to measure the candidates mental and physical ability and how they will adapt to work structure and real life situations in the workplace. This can also be justified by position offered due to its standards and requirements as seen in the job description and selection criteria.

Interview plan:

Applicant will be interviewed by the Executive Engineer manager and a recruitment manager from the HR department to assess the candidate’s responses. The interview will emphasize on the candidate’s previous employment, experiences, reactions to certain business situations and skills. It is necessary that all questions are in relation to the position to identify the candidate that fits best with the organisation’s culture and required selection criteria. It will be conducted in a professional and formal manner

Sample Questions and desirable responses: State your previous experience in relation to structural engineering and project management. Are you able to list some of the main current Australian Structural Design and Building Standards and Codes? 1 Provided example, however, was not confident whilst explaining answer.

Desired Response: One of my clients wanted to expand and re-organize the structure and did not meet the safety requirements due to the complex nature of infrastructure. To resolve this conflict I proposed a new approach and different design similar to their idea that met the regulations. It was an essential requirement to gain the trust and confidence of the client due the expensive deal that the business and other stakeholders would benefit from. I liaised efficiently and ethically in accordance to the laws and regulations of Australian Structural Design and Building Standards and Codes. All the decisions that I had made where in relation to the extensive research I had composed with the help of my team, using my skills and innovative thinking I was able to come to a resolution that benefited both parties in this project.

To ensure success, Structural Civil Engineers are required to be team player in group projects and will have certain responsibilities and expectations when designing new structures that are safe, stable and sustainable. To ensure this, Structural Civil Engineers must have accurate, excellent mathematical, IT oriented and possess exceptional problem-solving skills. Being part of Elite Structural Designs means you must have great communication and organisational skills, and knowledge regarding the safety and physical integrity of buildings and other large structures. This full-time position requires you to supervise other engineers and construction crews daily. Structural engineers must report to and be supervised by the chief civil structural engineer assigned to the project. Duties and responsibilities required include: Analyse Maps, blueprints and charts – Structural Civil Engineers review and analyse blueprints/detailed charts daily to establish the structural stability of materials and designs to build new projects and repair existing infrastructure systems. Design Project Plans – Structural Civil Engineers create new innovative designs in regard to new infrastructure systems as well as creating plans to repair existing buildings, bridges, and other structures. Write Reports and Estimates – Structural Civil engineers write detailed project reports forecast reports of costs for proposed building and repair projects. This includes reviewing environmental factors, government regulations, construction costs and risk analysis reports. Academic or trade qualifications needed: Must have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in structural Engineering. Work experience: Must have at least 3-4 years’ experience in a Structural civil engineering across building design/engineering to be considered for the position. Experience in structural design software such as ETABS and RAPT is extremely desirable.
