Module Aims The Becoming and Allied Health Professional module aims to foster and instil the key attitudes and attributes of an allied health professional. Module Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the module you will be able to: L1

discuss the allied health professional’s roles and responsibilities in providing a legal, and a professional duty of care;

L2

discuss the principles of professional ethics and the professional’s responsibility to the patient, the public, the regulatory body, employers and health promotion;

L3

demonstrate an understanding of models of health, illness and disability and principles of person-centred care;

L4

demonstrate an understanding of effective communication.

During the module you will be exploring key professional practice principles and concepts fundamental to the role of an allied health professional through a variety of learning activities. The Practice Placement Passport will direct you to explore the main regulatory and professional requirements, as well as developing your knowledge and application of health and safety, data protection and safeguarding procedures through a live class debate (Learning Outcome 1, 3 and 4). The key note presentations and group work will provide you with the opportunity to learn with and from your peers, lecturers and people with real life healthcare experiences (Learning Outcome 3 and 4). The progression of learning throughout the module is designed to prepare you for the summative written assignment. (Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 4). It is suggested you consider the knowledge and skills you have gained through the Finding your Academic Voice module to help you write the essay.

The assessment will be discussed in class during Week 3. An assessment discussion board will be available Week 3 and 4, then open again Week 11 and 12. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions in class in Week 12.

The assignment will be marked and moderated by members of the module team

Feedback date

20th January 2021 (20 working days after submission)  Feedback will be released in 20 working days, post submission date, in line with the QMU policy.  If the feedback is delayed an announcement will be posted on the Hub.  If you have an extension to the original submission date, feedback will be released 20 working days from the date of submission.

Professionalism in practice: discuss the key attitudes and attributes of an Allied Health Professional.

Written Assignment Guidelines In the essay it is suggested you explore one or two of the following topics: 

Duty of care



Professional ethics



Legislation: health and safety, data protection, equality and diversity



Autonomy and accountability



Fitness to practice

To inform your essay, refer to the literature you have accessed during the module and also read more broadly around your chosen topic(s). There is an expectation you will discuss and cite a minimum of five to eight peer reviewed journal articles as well as relevant regulatory and professional documents.

Word count: 1500 (maximum 1649 words, there is no minimum) 

Please note that if you submit work over the word limit you may have your mark restricted to 40 %.

Marking guidelines: The DPPR UG rubric will be used to provide feedback on the academic achievement of the assignment, the marking criteria directly links with the assignment guidelines. Please note: the rubric criteria are not equally weighted but provide an indication of the level of achievement for each criterion. The assessment guidelines will refer to the rubric criteria.

The essay demonstrates: 

a discussion exploring the key professional attitudes and attributes associated with the chosen topic(s) (criterion 1);



the identification and presentation of key information raised by the essay title and the chosen essay topic(s) (criterion 2);



the inclusion of a broad range of current, relevant literature to inform the text (criterion 3);



a questioning approach, considers the topic(s) from different viewpoints, for example regulator, employer, healthcare professional and the public (criterion 4);



the ability to draw key professional concepts/theories and key points together within the body of the text and the conclusion (criterion 5);



the ability to write in an academic style and develop the topic(s) in a coherent, objective, balanced manner (criterion 6);



adherence to QMU Write and Cite guidelines, with accurate in-text referencing and construction of the reference list (criterion 7);



the assignment meets the following Scottish Credit Qualification Level 7 Characteristics (criterion 8) o An overall appreciation of the body of knowledge informing being an allied health professional. o Knowledge that is embedded in the main theories, concepts and principles of being an allied health professional. o An understanding of the difference between explanations based on evidence and/or research and other sources, and of the importance of this difference. o Present and evaluate arguments, information and ideas that are routine to being an allied health professional o Convey complex ideas in well-structured and coherent form

Written Assignment Presentation Introduction: Set the scene i.e. introduce why the one or two areas you are discussing are relevant to AHP practice (approx. 200 words) Main body:

This should discuss the key issues, using appropriate literature to support your statements. (900-1100 words)

Conclusion: A general conclusion should contain no new information or references. The text should include a summary of the main points highlighted in the Main Body of the text. Ensure your concluding remarks do not just repeat what has been said elsewhere.
