Objective Viewpoint In Hunters in the Snow

The short story, the Hunters in the Snow by Tobias Wolff is one example of objective viewpoint narration. Objective viewpoints don’t often exemplify the characters feelings or personal thoughts. Which can make a reader wonder, what are they actually feeling? In the Hunters in the Snow, the main characters include Tub, Kenny and Frank. Because of objective viewpoint there is no specific person telling the story making the author create a “camera like (pg 238) “feel of the whole piece. In the beginning of the story, Tub is waiting outside in the freezing cold waiting for his friends to arrive to go on a hunting trip. In the dialogue on page 79 it said, “Tub had been waiting for an hour in the falling snow. He paced the sidewalk to keep warm and stuck his head out over the curb whenever he saw lights approaching.” This statement can infer that, Tub must have been impatient due to him pacing back and forth and looking over to see if any of the cars approaching could of been his friends car. He was cold and annoyed that his friend did not come on time. Kenny then shows up to pick up Tub with Frank and then they go on to their hunting trip. Kenny is known to be the bully in the small group and most likely considered the alpha. Throughout the trip he tends to make fun of both Tub and Frank by bringing up personal problems such as Tub’s dieting and Frank’s young lover. Which can be assumed as to why things turned out terribly wrong by the end of the

story. Besides that, rank is the last major character. He is more of a calm person and would just like to fit in. We get this type of feel because in the story he has conversation with both Tub and Kenny, and he acts completely different around the two of them. The relationship between Kenny and Tub can be categorized as not the greatest considering the fact that Tub shot Kenny. Kenny also makes fun of Tub and points out that he is not the skinniest by mentioning his dieting. Not only that, but he also tends to drag Frank into it. On page 81 it says, “Oh, pardon me. I take it back. You’re just wasting away before my very eyes. Isn’t he, Frank?”. The relationship between Frank and Kenny isn’t the greatest either. One example is that Kenny always tells Frank what to do or agree to. Frank just wants to get along with him so he tends to be mean when Kenny is mean just so there will be no complications. Then there is Frank and Tub. Frank and Tub’s relationship is quite friendlier than the one they had with Kenny. When they arrive at the restaurant, they end up having a personal conversation about Frank's unhappy marriage and Tub’s “dieting”. Tub ends up telling Frank the truth that he is just binge eating and it is not his glands fault. Frank ends up telling Tub that he might leave Nancy. Meanwhile, Kenny is in the car slowly dying. I feel that Frank and Tub ended up making the decision to make two stops because they didn't care much about Kenny since he was offensive to both. Objective viewpoint is a "camera like (pg. 238)" perspective because there is no one person telling the story. It gives one the right to infer how a character feels and pulls the reader to make critical thoughts....
