" 2. What were the government standards for the construction of the concrete levees? ! - Two types of levees, earth and concrete. ! - Made to withstand up to a fast moving category 3 hurricane. " 3. Why did the wetlands begin disappearing after the levees were built? How have disappearing wetlands increased the vulnerability of New Orleans? ! - The wetlands were strengthened from flooding, and would soak up the flood water like a sponge, and the trees were a wind break. ! - The wetlands began to disappear. 20 square miles a year. As these disappear, storm surges become stronger. " 4. How did the workers repair the breaches in the levees? How long did it take to finally pump all the water out of the city? ! - Using sandbags delivered by helicopter. It took a month to dry the city. " 5. What are two strategies suggested to best decrease the risk to people in New Orleans from future hurricanes? ! - Pressure burst — flood wall failed at base because the earth was too weak. Walls should have been built deeper into the ground. ! - One suggestion is to invert the bowl so it is higher than the sea level. ! - Another is to let the river run wild to rebuild the wet lands and create new tributaries.
