The wetlands began to disappear. 20 square miles a year. As these disappear, storm surges become stronger. 4. How did the workers repair the breaches in the levees? How long did it take to finally pump all the water out of the city? - Using sandbags delivered by helicopter. It took a month to dry the city. 5. What are two strategies suggested to best decrease the risk to people in New Orleans from future hurricanes? - Pressure burst  flood wall failed at base because the earth was too weak.
