With traditional discipline, what are the three fears that children often associate with being disciplined? - fear of punishment - fear of failure - fear of loss of love - fear of abandonment What is the “conscious” part of conscious discipline? - Conscious discipline is the frontal lobe or higher level. It is based on the brain state being able to move from an unconscious brain state to a more aware state. Once we become more conscious, we can be at a higher level of understanding. Once we are in a higher functioning brain state, we can respond rather than just react. Using conscious discipline, how do we confront “conflict” or sibling rivalry? - By changing our view of conflict and instead viewing it as an opportunity to teach life skills. By changing the perception of conflict, we can then change our response. How does a “lack of connection” affect children? - A “lack of connection” can affect children by making them inattentive, unmotivated, and lacking impulse control. This can also cause children to feel unloved, unworthy, and a sense of not belonging. How do we teach kids to avoid being angry, or exhibit negative behavior? - As an adult it’s important to practice “being a star” (smile, take a breath, and hold it, relax) but it is also important to teach “be a star” to children as well. We teach them to breathe and if they are older, we teach them to visualize something positive and we need to teach them specifically how to calm down. We model being a star for them so that they are able calm down themselves.
