#1+2 (228) 1. In Danah Boyd’s article, “Why America Is Self-Segregating,” she argues that rather than becoming a more diverse nation, the United States is becoming a nation of self-contained identity groups. An example of diversity being broken down because of choice by people is “college dorm assignments” (224) and roommates. Technology has come in between us having to struggle and learn diversity by allowing us to scout out better roommates. Phones allowed “incoming students [to focus] on maintaining ties to high school friends rather than building new relationships” (225). Although phones keep us in touch with old friends, they distract us from focusing on the new ones in front of us which weakens people’s potential to be greater even though we don’t know it. Through experience, I have realized that people in diverse groups tend to do better than non-diverse groups. It makes you feel more comfortable and at home when you have familiar faces around. Being a Jew, I tend to constantly surround myself in a Jewish environment and it really benefits me because not only am I able to learn more about my culture, but I am able to better myself as a Jew and understand more of what it means to be Jewish. 2. Danah Boyd uses a blend of styles of language in her essay. In paragraph 4 she wrote that Mark Zuckerberg is “naïve as hell” (220), using informal language contrasting her discussion of “fragmentation, polarization, and de-diversification” (220). Her blend of styles has an effect on my response. I felt as though she was a little bit undeciding and felt so harshly about Zuckerberg’s app Facebook. It shows the rage she has against Zuckerberg and his dream to build the tool that would “connect people at an unprecedented scale” (220). I see the strong bias she holds in her argument, wishing that self-segregation would be undone. She constantly changed her opinion which threw me off a bit because at one point it was hard for me to keep up with what she was trying to say. #4 (278) 4. Danah Boyd wrote an article criticizing the ways in which Americans are self-

segregating. I think that she would respond to Moro’s description of Notre Dame’s campus and Moro’s proposal to minority clubs in a negative way. Boyd argues that “we need a diverse and highly connected social fabric” (228). Moro’s description of Notre Dame is exactly the opposite of what Boyd thinks students in America should be like. She thinks that they should be more diverse and that students should get out of their comfort zone. She would support Moro’s claim that “colleges would enrich the educational experience for all students by introducing multicultural clubs” (270).

By introducing multicultural clubs, it lets people mingle outside of their own minority groups, expanding their horizons and connections in their lives....
