Description

Breanna Frederick RHB 381.022 Coding Activity Please code according to what we have been talking about all semester in this course – professional interviewing procedures and terminology – NOT everyday conversation logic. Instructions:  Give only one code per helper response  Give this one code based on the whole response, NOT individual parts of the response  Give this one code based upon your use of the decision tree that follows  You use the decision tree by reading it step by Roman numeral step until you come to the correct code for that whole particular helper response. Decision Tree I.

Is it attending to the person’s problem appropriately? If not, then it is an inappropriate comment [IN]

II.

Is the counselor response reflecting information? If yes, then code which type of reflection: A. If there is only a “feeling” word, then it is a reflection of feeling [RF] B. If there is a feeling word and content (general information) [RCF] C. If it there is no feeling word and only one piece of general information, then it is probably a reflection of content [RC] D. If there are a number of feelings and/or a number of general pieces of information, then it is probably a summary [SU]

III.

Is it a question? (Does it have a question mark?) A. If it starts with a question word (who, what, where, when, why, how), then it is probably an open question [OQ] B. If it starts with a verb, then it is probably a closed question [CQ]

IV.

If it is none of the above, then it is one of the following: A. A statement or request that seeks clarification about a topic [SC] B. A short word or phrase to encourage the person to keep talking [EN]

V.

Do Not Code Check-outs! These are just things helpers add on in places to check for accuracy. Got that? (“Got that” is a form of check-out. These come in many forms, so be on the lookout for them, and when you find them DO NOT code them!)

Column [OQ] Helper: So, what brings you in today? Client: I feel like I am responsible for everyone, and it is really hard to carry that burden. [SC] Helper: Tell me what you mean by being responsible. Client: That what I do affects everyone, my family, my coworkers, my coworkers’ families, and so on. [CQ]Helper: So you have this idea that you are responsible for everyone’s welfare. Client: Yes. [CQ] Helper: And you are exhausted from carrying so much responsibility. Have I got that right? Client: Yes, very much so. [OQ] Helper: I am not sure I understand. How is it that you are responsible for so many people, people you don’t even know? Client: Because if I don’t do my work, then my coworkers need to pick up my slack, which means more work for them, which means time away from their families, which makes it my fault because the problem started with me not being responsible enough in getting my work done in the first place. [CQ] Helper: So the burden of work gets passed down the line, but you are the one carrying all the weight of that burden. Client: Exactly! [IN] Helper: Does anybody else carry any burden at all? Client: Yes, but it’s my fault that others are burdened, so I carry it more. [IN] Helper: That makes no sense at all. Client: I know, but that’s how I feel. [EN] Helper: Go on. Client: In my head I know it’s not my fault, but in my heart I feel it is all my fault. [RCF] Helper: So far it sounds like you’re feeling overwhelmed because of a sense of burdensomeness you have with believing you’re responsible for others, that this is exhausting you, and that you’re not able to imagine someone else carrying this burden. Client: Yes, that sounds right.

[OQ] Helper: What would your life be like if you didn’t have this “burdened” feeling?...
