Introduction to Computer Architecture

Fall 2019

Homework 1 Due Monday 7 October 2019 10:00 am in 2131 Kemper

Book problems (do these problems, and also the question below): COD5E 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.9 (all), 1.10 (all), 1.12 (all), 1.13 (all). 1. Ben Bitdiddle, an astronomer at UC Davis, produces 400 terabytes (assume 400 trillion bytes) of data daily. He needs to send the data to his colleague Alyssa at Stanford. Ben has three assistants who each propose a different way to get the data to Alyssa as quickly as possible. On all parts of this problem, clearly state your assumptions. Your instructor computed bandwidths in bits per second, so you should too. (a) Cy proposes to send the data through the Internet. He realizes that he can have exclusive use of UC Davis’s CENIC 100G connection to send the data to Alyssa. (As with all parts of this problem, you will have to do some searching to figure out various speeds, sizes, etc.) What is Cy’s bandwidth (bits/s)? How long does it take the first bit of data to arrive (latency)? How long does it take him to send all the data to Alyssa? (b) Eva has a number of friends with wireless hubs on the route from Davis to Stanford running the new 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) wireless protocol. She can send data from friend to friend until it reaches Alyssa, all using 802.11ax connections, all running at peak 802.11ax bandwidth. What is Eva’s bandwidth? How long does it take the first bit of data to arrive (latency)? How long does it take her to send all the data to Alyssa? (c) Lem puts forty 10 TB hard drives in a box and drives them to Alyssa. What is Lem’s bandwidth? How long does it take the first bit of data to arrive (latency)? How long does it take him to bring all the data to Alyssa? (Do not consider transfer time from disk to Alyssa.) (d) Independent contractor Louis wants to achieve maximum bandwidth on the road by transporting maximum data. He packs every square millimeter of space in the rear trunk of a 2017 Tesla Model S with 1 TB microSDXC cards. What is Louis’s achieved bandwidth on a similar trip to Stanford? (Do not consider transfer time from SD cards to Alyssa.) (Note Louis is transporting [much] more data than Ben needs; thus this part is not directly comparable to the other parts.) (e) Which assistant—Cy, Eva, or Lem—will allow Ben to get his data to Alyssa as quickly as possible?
