Headright system, religious freedom to all Christians, representative assembly Charles Town estab. in 1680 North- backwoods, subsistence, few slaves, isolated w/ little trade South- fertile land, aristocracy, slaves, trade was vital, strong ties to Barbados

New York

1664 Granted to Duke of York by Charles II

Land between CT and DE Rivers, already controlled by Dutch, English force them to surrender, colony of great diversity

New Jersey

1674 Broke off of NY

Duke sold it to two friends- Sir John Berkeley and Sir George Cateret,, used to be into Delaware River Valley became royal colony in 1702, place of diversity, mostly small farmers Existed as E and W 1674-1702

Pennsylvania (Penn’s Woods)

Quakers want religious freedom and an Am colony, King Charles II in debt to William Penn, paid him with NY and MD Philly est 1682 Colony prosper- mild climate and fertile soil, well-planned, immigrants from all over Euro Delaware carved out of S PA in 1703
