Ideal Society

Manglona 2

My Ideal Society I.

Key Components a. Norms, ideas, values, and beliefs can vary, thus allowing for a range of cultures, ideas and innovations. Include source 4 in that “we might construct a public social world not governed by ideal theory but rather acceptable to diverse perspectives.” b. People learn their culture from their primary development, through family and their close community. They may also learn through school. c. Social maintenance is held in place by laws and moral codes. d. The full range of social groups should exist: primary, secondary, reference, etc. Include source 5 American Identity. e. Deviance is key in evolution of society. Ideal societies cannot exist without such deviance. Include source 4 The Tyranny of the Ideal and Source 1 Civil Society. f. Societal Rankings based on Gilbert and Khal’s model of social class, however, we must question whether the elimination of the lower class is necessary. Perhaps a lower class can exist, but in a less impoverished state. Societal rankings are based on skill aka meritocracy (Source 2 Openstax). g. Gender roles should not exist since both individuals have the full capacity to perform tasks. If gender roles do exist, it is for the sake of a subcultural existence and used as a reference group in the deviance sector. Overall, gender roles are taboo.

Theory

Manglona 3

a. Theories and research from sociology can explain societal ideals since they evaluate factors that are common in a prospering society and factors that cause ruin. By using the research gathered and forming theories, we can apply them to real life and develop a more idealistic society. b. Comte’s positivism perspective is the best fit for an ideal society due to his understanding that not all things can conform to one rule. A society in the macro level and its individuals in the micro level must be flexible and allow the flow of nature while still observing the scientific method. This applies to the idea that deviance exists even in ideal utopias. III.

People a. Members of society behave according to the current social norms and morals. They interact through socialization. Ideally, the minorities and majorities should be in balance, without discrimination. In groups, out groups and subcultures play roles in developing people and their interests. b. People address issues of deviance with set rules and boundaries. For example, deviance must not cause violence or harm to anyone. Those who cross this boundary will be punished through institutionalization, like our current justice system. However, there is no death penalty. c. People can change social positions and rankings based on their skills, education, or favor to society. Favor is mostly reserved for sports players, musicians, and artists.

d. Social classes strive for the rise of living standard while also keeping in mind to help those in lower classes. This allows for the advancement of goods and services without worry of leaving others behind. e. Since gender roles do not exist, tasks are divided based on the skill of an individual. f.

Older members of society are treated with respect since their knowledge of life exceeds younger generations and they are taken care of by government for their service to society....
