IDS 400 Week 1 Discussion

Hello Classmates, I'm Candice, and this is one of my last classes here at SNHU; I am so excited it's been a 12-year journey, and I am happy to be writing this post today. I am a Special Needs Instructional Teacher at a Middle School in Arlington, Va. I have been teaching for the last 10 years, and I am completing my degree so that I can finally obtain my own classroom. I have been married for the last 4 years, and it feels as if time is flying by. My classroom is full of Diversity. For the last five years at my current school in Va, my classroom has been full of so many different ethnicities along with special needs. When I formerly taught in DC, my classroom was full of students of the same race and special need. I believe the field of special education has changed tremendously over the last few years. I believe that my study of Diversity and cultural sensitivity from this class will allow me to better serve my students. Diversity has a wide range of meanings depending on the situation, but in this class, Diversity refers to individuals, ethnicities, and cultures. By defining a person's place in society, Diversity and social identity are closely linked. There are many people who are geographically, culturally, or spiritually not the same inside a diverse society. Many of those distinctions contribute to the human's identity. Society applies those principals to define that individual. In the matrix of domination, the intersection of Diversity and social identity is manifested in the idea that an individual has multiple social identities. Therefore society tries to determine each person's identity inside the society. Furthermore, Diversity is sometimes used as a social concept that divides people in a society, whether they agree or disagree.
