Description

Igneous Rocks Identification Activity Worksheet Instructions Use the Igneous Rock Classification Chart and the Module 5 information to identify your Igneous Rocks samples. Record your information in the table below. Then answer the questions, take a picture of your identified specimens, and upload your worksheet and picture to the Module 5 – Igneous Rocks Identification dropbox.

1. Consider two of your samples – granite and rhyolite. How are these two rocks similar? How are they different? What are the controlling factors that determine the difference between these two rocks?

They both have felsic magma composition. Granite however, has an extrusive orgin and Rhyolite has an intrusive orgin. Granite had more time to form compared to Rhyolite

2. Consider two of your samples, basalt and rhyolite. How are these two rocks similar? How are they different? What are the controlling factors that determine the difference between these two rocks?

Basalt and Rhyolite are both aphanitic and intrusive. However, Basalt has mafic magma while Rhyolite has felsic magma.

Igneous Rocks Identification Activity Worksheet 3. List some of the minerals found in gabbro. List some of the minerals found in granite. What are the controlling factors that determine the difference between these two rocks?

Gabbro: plagioclase, pyroxene, olivine, hornblende Granite: orthoclase, plagioclase, quartz, biotite, muscovite, hornblende Gabbro has mafic magma while granite has felsic magma.

4. List some of the common minerals found in pumice.

Pumice is not composed of any minerals because it cools very rapidly and forms a glassy texture

After you have completed the activity, upload your completed Igneous Rocks Identification Activity Worksheet and the photo of your specimens to the Module 5 – Igneous Rocks Identification dropbox. Please use Microsoft Word for your document; if you are using other software, please convert it to a pdf so it can be read in D2L....
