Ideas for motivating children to read: Igniting a Passion for Reading by Steven Layne 1. -

Importance of read aloud There are many benefits that come from reading aloud to students. Two of these benefits are students have an increased reading comprehension and have better listening skills. Reading aloud to students can help create a desire to want to read on their own. It can help students find new books to read and new genres to explore.

2. Book Stories - Teachers share a personal story about a book or their experiences with it. - This can cause students to be more curious and interested in the book, and could end up with them reading it for themselves. - Students trust what their teachers say, so if you tell them as a teacher you enjoyed it they believe they will as well.

3. -

Teachers Hot Read This type of motivation is when a teacher uses a display to the book she is currently reading. This display of the book allows students to see the different books that you are actually reading. It can help students find new books to be interested. It can also give something for students to talk about with each other.

4. -

Reading Logs According to the text, a reading log allows teachers and students to record everything they read. Reading logs can look different, but the author of the text uses spaces for the title, author, genre, and a rating. When teachers have their reading logs displayed, it allows their students to find new books they want to read. Having the students use a reading log allows them to quickly find different books to recommend to another student. Using reading logs helps show students that they actually are reading things, even when they don’t consider themselves a reader.

5. Book Previews - The reader investigates the book before reading it. - They look at the front and back covers, the title, chapter headings, the dedication and more.

6. -

Teacher Book Chats This can help bring a book alive. It gives the students a chance to critically think about the book and learn more about it. Ask a question related to the topic or theme of the book.

7. Book Shopping

8. -

Buzz about Books This is basically a discussion group between a group of 4-5 students. These groups allow students to discuss with their peers the books they are independently reading. In each group the students take turns talking about their books. The begin by identifying the title, author, rating, and page number they are on. Then they begin talking about a certain topic that they teacher gave at the beginning of the discussion. These discussion groups usually last about 15 minutes.

9. Status of the Class - This is kind of like the previous motivation type, but instead it includes the entire class. - The class goes one by one and quickly shows the book. They then say the title of the book, the author, the page number they are one, and the page number. - This allows the class to see and hear about what their peers are reading about. - This also allows students to have a way to find new books to read.
