What are the benefits of making real life connections to education? As students in high school we can all remember going from class to class learning about some subjects that were interesting and others that weren’t however there was at

apply to their daily life and future careers. The application of experiences to education allows students to understand why they are learning and how the information and skills can be used across all subjects and real life circumstances. Another obstacle present to students is that the education system is still very primitive in the methods by which students are being taught which stops them from making real life connections to the material. The development of soft skills which students use in everyday life is being ignored in the construction of curriculum and instead the curriculum is constructed around memorizing information. The memorization of text also contributes to high stress levels and poor mental health because those that learn better using other methods are pressured to perform in a standardized manner. Tests also limit the different type of skills students can develop including those developed in group work and presentations. In test-based courses students are limited to providing the right answer to a question rather than understand the theory behind the question and how it applies to their life. The application of knowledge learned is the real purpose of going to school instead of simply getting a graduation certificate by performing well on tests. We can understand the importance of engaging students because memorizing information in school doesn’t always lead to its application in real life, however when engaged with relevant material students gain the ability to “think independently and exercise judgement, as well as contribute their learned skills to society” (Killeavy, 2003, pp.106).

What are teachers doing to help? Although the content of courses may be limited to that which doesn’t interest students the skills

instruction, will enable students to better customize their high school education and improve their accordingly using technological recourses such as YouTube. Teenagers use technology on a daily basis so it’s become easier for teachers to relate to students through a resource that they are already comfortable with. Using technology teachers are able to help students understand the material and also develop technical computer skills related to their field of interest. As the world changes the methods of teaching and learning have as well and in turn teachers have now been given the responsibility to prepare students for skills they will use outside of school. With technology being a globalized resource teachers can use technology to help students understand information related to current affairs and events and relate the material to students of different backgrounds. Another example of how technology can be used to make real life connections to education is through virtual field trips by watching films and listening to podcasts. The documentary Bowling for Columbine is a great example of this connection through which the film illustrated the origin of gun violence in America (specifically in schools), the continued genocide caused through gun use by America against other countries, the current political status of gun use in America seen through the NRA, and the fundamental underlying issue of violence in American culture (Moore, 2002). By watching such films students can relate the issue of violence in education to real life events and understand why they are learning about the issue and how the material they’re learning can help them create change. Another method by which teachers are helping students make real life connections to the material is through self-
