1.1 INTRODUCTION TO SCHOOL RESOURCE CENTER 1.1.1 BACKGROUND OF PUSAT SUMBER SMK SALOR According to the National Institute of Building Sciences (2012), school libraries differ from most other types of libraries because they are contained within school buildings which in addition to library space may include classrooms, auditoriums, circulation space, administrative offices and cafeterias. In Malaysia, school library or normally known as School Resource Center (SRC) is a part of the whole continuum of educational provisions. The school resource center which forms an integral part in any school today has come a long way. The SMK Salor resource center has been built since the establishment of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Salor on a land owned by Tok Jerulong (Tuan Haji Said) in 1965. It is in the rural category with a distance of approximately 15 km from the city Kota Bharu. Until 1972, the school resource center was located in a room measuring 30 x 40 feet and was managed based on experience and understanding from reading the "Library Guide" only. In 1983, it was moved to a more spacious room which is the room next to the computer lab on the second floor of block A building. Then, the school resource center has gone through some revolution to keep up to date with the new services, collections and facilities that have been added to meet the users’ needs. In the early years of its establishment, the school resource center only owned about 5000 books and lack of many equipment. So far, the library has about 15000 books from various categories and daily provides services to its users. This library provides services to all levels of SMK Salor community. The school resource center is always trying its best in pursuing its vision and mission to raise the status of world -class education for Malaysians even though it is located at the far end of the world. The school resource center provides a comfortable and friendly environment to its area so that students will be able to use it in a way one can experience a peaceful mind while reading books or other reading materials. It is managed by a teacher who obtained h er education from the University Sains Malaysia, namely Mrs. Hasnah Binti Mamat. The school resource center has a very wide area which include the teachers and librarians’ room, hall and APD room (screening room). With the rapid explosion of information technology, the concept of the library as a resource center has been further expanded by placing units other than the library. The school resource center aims to provide a range of learning opportunities for both large and small groups as well as individuals with a focus on intellectual content, information literacy, and the learner. The objectives of the establishment of school resource center are to collect, store and distribute various types of information as well as provide educational 1|Page

software to students and teachers, form a society with a culture of knowledge and love of reading, train and guide students and teachers in using the skills of obtaining and using information and many more. 1.1.2 MISSION Generate and form knowledgeable, dynamic, creative, innovative and disciplined school community by referring to PSS (Pusat Sumber Sekolah) as an information resource center in line with the vision and philosophy of national education. 1.1.3 VISION Creating knowledgeable school community with a balanced personality including creative and innovative thinking through a love of reading and exploring information sources. 1.1.4 OPERATION HOURS The SMK Salor resource center is open every day during the school days by which the students or teachers will also have some available time to go to the school resource center at any time from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Otherwise, you will not be able to enter the resource center if you visit at the wrong time such as on public holidays or during the weekend which is obviously closed because the school is also closed. 1.1.5 ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

1.2 EXPERIENCES USING SCHOOL RESOURCE CENTER DURING SCHOOL TIME My school resource center experience had been the most thrilling and exciting because I would never have the chance to experience this again after I graduated high school. Life as a university student is surely different than being a high school student. Firstly, the ten minutes reading activity was launched in 2015 and only established once in every year to improve students’ knowledge and love of reading. Although it was given a limited time to read some books but the purpose of this activity was to teach students that each second was valuable and beneficial that you could obtain new knowledge within 10 minutes rather than doing something meaningless and dull. Both students and teachers needed to bring their own books from home or they could just borrow from the school resource center before the activity started where all participants assembled in the school resource center hall after the bell rang. Secondly, each class was scheduled to visit the library once a week alongside a teacher who was teaching the particular subject. Hence, the teacher and students had to continue their lesson in the school resource center for 30 minutes and the other 30 minutes was given to the students to read any genre of books available on the shelves. Students were encouraged to read because reading would give you more information in education that would somewhat help you in doing your homework and test. In addition, the choir & poem contest was an annual activity provided by the Teacher Council and was held in the school resource center screening room which was very comfortable and pleasant for every students and teachers to watch the contestant performed on the stage. In fact, everyone was welcome to join the contest because it would increase courage in students to perform a task successfully in front of the public without having to feel shy and awkward. The school resource center did not only provide books and other reading materials but it also came up with some fun and interesting board games for students and teacher who might want to clear up their minds and release tensions for a couple of minutes. Honestly, it was a great way to get those who had usually spend an entire weekend playing video games out of the house and enjoying some face-to-face contact with others. Some focused particularly on chess while others were enjoying monopoly, scrabble and many more. Last but not least, the fun reading quiz was organized by the librarians for all students and teachers to participate once in every month in order to improve students’ learning skills to become more effective and productive. The teacher would be passing the same title of books to all students to read them intensively so it would help them to remember every detail of the 3|Page

story because they would be answering some questions about the books. Students who earned a lot of points by giving the correct answer would win a novel and a small box of stationary.

1.3 SERVICES 1.3.1 IT SERVICE The school resource center has 10 computers available including a high speed internet, scanning and printing services where every student with a library card can use them free of charge. Thus, students need to buy a library card which cost them only RM10 a year to use the computer/technology service since they are not allowed to bring any gadgets because it might cause a distraction in their learning process. Most students use the computers to search information they cannot find in the books because by surfing through internet you will get the information within less a minute. If you are clueless you can surely seek help from a librarian and she/he will guide you step by step. 1.3.2 BORROWING & RETURNING The borrowing & returning service is provided to help every student and teacher to borrow any materials from the school resource center including books, magazines, encyclopaedias, dictionaries and many more. Students and teachers need to bring the materials to the counter so that the librarians can proceed the borrowing process in the computer. Usually you will be given 2 weeks before you can return the materials back in the school resource center and you will be charge for RM0.20 a day if you will not be able to return at the time. Of course, there is a limitation in borrowing because in previous case there were some students who did some damage to the books by ripping off the front cover, scribbling some pages and even worst they lost the books. 1.3.3 STUDY PLACES Effective school library spaces are designed to offer an exciting and welcoming environment for the school community and experiences that impact positively on teaching and learning in the school. Therefore, the school resource center offers a wide area of study places exclusively to help students in meeting the teaching and learning needs within an environment where they feel safe and secure so that they can focus while studying, reading, finishing homework or working in a groupwork. The librarians will always keep an eye of the study places to prevent any interference and violation against the rules that might affect other students from focusing on their work. 1.3.4 REFERENCE SERVICE Reference service for students often involve not only answering specific questions, but also personalized instruction in the methods of identifying and locating research materials. Databases, bibliographies, and other aids designed to introduce students to the material the school resource center provides and to guide them in finding the research material further 5|Page

enrich the pool of available resources. Reference service is provided by librarians who introduce the wide variety of resources in the school resource center system and beyond, connecting students with other school supportive services including academic, financial, writing, and counselling services.

1.4 ACTIVITIES/PROGRAMMES 1.4.1 NILAM PROGRAM Nilam program is a compulsory programme provided not only to develop students interest in reading but also to improve student’s language skills with pronunciation, intonation and spelling in both Malay and English languages. Most importantly, students who read the most books in a particular time will receive an award every month and by doing so, other students will compete against each other to win the awards by reading as many books in the school resource center as you want. Besides, students will be informed about the program during the first assembly of the week where the media teacher will perform a speech including the instruction and condition about the program. 1.4.2 VISITING A BOOK FAIR Students will be visiting a book fair held in the city Kota Bharu twice in every year alongside other students from many different schools in Kelantan. Plus, the book fair gives students an even bigger selection because it gets books from many different publishers and students will also get a lower price on each item they buy here compared to the bookstores. The purpose of the program is to give students a motivation to read by offering them a wide selection of books and other reading materials such as comics, novels, journals and many more to boost their interest in reading. 1.4.3 BOOK BUFFET The Book Buffet activity gives students an opportunity to read genres that they never would have picked up by themselves. There will be different books on each desk in a classroom. Students will be reading the books for 5 to 8 minutes and then they have to switch with someone else. These books should be of a great variety with many different types represented. At the end of the class, students should have switched 5 to 10 times. Furthermore, if there are any books they started that they would continue to read if they had the chance then those students will definitely get a copy of the books they enjoyed. 1.4.4. LIBRARY SCAVENGER HUNT This activity is for students to better understand the school resource center and to see all that it has to offer. Firstly, students will be divided into several different groups in an effort to finish a library scavenger hunt. Next, they will be given each group a list of ten different items they need to find or list. Some examples of items on the scavenger hunt can be to "introduce yourself to the librarians and list their names on this sheet," "list three bound magazine titles and explain what bound magazines are" and "locate and list a reference book

that represents one of your interests". The first team that answers all the questions correctly wins a prize.

1.5 EXPECTATION TOWARDS THE SCHOOL RESOURCE CENTER School resource center is an academic space where all information and service needed by school and students can be easy access. While the school resource center serves many roles within the school and community, the service must be in good condition to avoid any delay in use of service when in emergency. The staffs must be friendly and always available in the area of school resource center because whenever students need help or guide, there are staffs available to help student. Although it is center for student to gather, the school resource center is not a social hub, café or lounge. So, the noisy environment must be avoided to ensure other user get comfort to use the center. Since most of school resource centers are well-equipped with advanced technology, the school resource center must have a limited timing in order for students to use it. Thus, students must abide by the Acceptable Use Policy. Computers use are for academic research only. Last but not least, the school resource center should publish updates news and information at a special board in its area so that students can refer to the information board for news, advertisement or event directory from teachers.

RESOURCE CENTER In order to encourage students to come to the school resource center, it must be equipped with good facilities. Facilities can be defined as something designed, built, installed, etc., to serve a specific function affording a convenience or service. Foremost, the school resource center has a full responsibility to keep an update to the latest version of information resources because it is meant to be the only place where students or teachers seek information. Additionally, most 21st century school resource centers programs provide students with more than just books selected to home readers’ developing skills and to instil a love of reading. The school resource center should sophisticate a learning environment which will meet the students and teachers needs in their learning and teaching process by making available the update and latest information resources. Other than that, both students and teachers who visit the school resource center must be tolerate with each other to keep every area in the school resource center clean and is always in good condition because it will help students and teachers to focus on their work and feel comfortable when using the services. Therefore, foods and drinks are not allowed in the school resource center so everyone has to immediately finish their foods and drinks and the leftovers need to be thrown into the trash can before entering the school resource center. The school resource center also need to change a new trash can if the old one is broken and no longer usable or perhaps provide at least three different trash can where the students and teachers can throw the trash into its category. Lastly, the school resource center should hire friendly staffs that are always available to help and guide students and teachers step by step until they finally manage to work things out on their own. The staffs will assist students and teachers in many ways such as locating the books, finding information on the internet and so on because they are fully trained to be professionals to serve in the school resource center. In case, there are some students who ...
