Intro to Impact of IT...
Impact of IT Learning Objectives What is the impact of IT? Is there an impact? Communities and organisations you are dealing with What are the common technologies around us?
Impact of IT on Organisations Investment of IT = $4 million dollars Will not change much by the time we reach 2022 What will change between different CIO? How do they compete? Create Products that help with Connectivity, Interactivity, Cost Drops, etc
Clouds Phones Cheaper Devices
At 2000, Internet and Opera were around (Opera costed money) Current = Google Chrome Same Technology but faster and free At 2000, Taxi Drivers obtain licenses and sells expensive fares to tourists Current = Google introduces Google Maps, Shows Directions and Built in GPS Technology made it more Convenient, Free, No License Required, etc
Impact of IT on Individuals 1/3 of Australians will check their devices within 5 minutes of walking Increases 14% increase every year 50% of mobile consumers between age 18-25 interact on their phone within 5 mins 80% time individual consumers spend on mobile apps Opportunity! What sort of opportunities do companies have when you have a device oriented generation. When you have this consumerisation of IT. User carrying your data, your name, everything with you. Company takes advantage of this with a new marketing technique having this new "user base" though technology
So what are the impacts? Open Opportunities can open both good or bad doors New Opportunities, be the next Bill Gates Social media - Can Be fun, Can be Depressing You can stay connected or be isolated -Organisation encourages you to corroborate via Social Media; has both pros and cons Online Shopping - Buy Bargains or get Ripped Off Computerised Car - Drive Faster or Avoid Driving Completely Accessibility to information - We can study Free, or have no time to study Eg. Harvards biggest threat…is free online information We can stay healthy or bring all junk food home Eg. Woolworths using Loyalty card to know what you buy Next time you run out of stock, you "conveniently" get an email from Woolworths on new stock to buy
Make better choices, or make bad ones Technology Advancements - Live longer or Shorter Eg. 3D Printers can print out new parts for the human body, potentially save lives Big Data - We Can be Competitive or Kill your Competitors We can make better decisions or delegate it to others Revolutionise way to organise and categorise Data Eg. Used to Store data in a Database. Now we Store it in a Cache Memory. Method used to grab Data quick in Terabytes of information Enterprise Computing Quantum Computer Overall, it increases our Productivity
So what technologies are there? The Internet A Platform that allows us to do certain things Protocols that allow us to communicate Cloud Computing Search Engines The Internet of Things The Ability to Connect "things" Social Social Media Mobile Wearable Technology Eg. Google Glasses 3D Printing Printing new parts for equipment Advanced Robotics Autonomous (Air) Vehicles Google Car Big Data ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE! Cortana! :) Siri Quantum Computers
Punctuated Equilibrium Theory (PET) Comes from works of Evolution and Biology Used here to understand the Impact of IT There are two states - Equilibrium and Punctuation Equilibrium when using daily technology Punctuation when there is a revolutionary new design...
