There are a number to choose from, including texts that were part of assignments (meaning that everyone didn’t need to read them, but a group-member may have). It may be necessary to Google the author’s name to find out additional details—this is fine, and citations are not needed. Using your chosen text, answer the three questions below in complete sentences. “The F-Word” by Firoozeh Dumas 1. What does the author’s identify contribute to the success of the text? (2 points) The text is more successful because we are made more aware of how racism affects people from another countries. The main point of the essay was to show how much racism immigrants go through. 2. How would it detract from the text is the author’s identity was other than it is? (1 point) If the author were a white person, their experience or opinion would not have as much value or impact as someone like Firoozeh’s has. For example, people who have difficult names to pronounce that are white, typically do not call it racism when their name is mispronounced, unlike Firoozeh’s. 3. What, if anything, does knowing the author’s identify allow us to do as readers? (For example, does it present a viewpoint or a set of values that you may not be familiar with?)
