Description

Emily Andrade 07/14/16 Common Reading In this unbelievable non-fictional book, “In Order to Live” written by Yeonmi Park deals with horrific experiences of rape, human trafficking, and the process of escaping these rigorous countries in Asia like North Korea and China. Yeonmi’s experience at the end of the day is seen as a triumph. That triumph she has is like no other; Yeonmi and her mom were strong enough to escape to their freedom and they couldn’t be more proud of their decision. There have been a million and one stories dealing with people escaping to their freedom, whether its Central Americans crossing the border to the U.S or the Caribbean’s escaping their way out of poverty to come to the “land of the free.” All this talk about freedom takes me back to the time when my parents experienced their important move from Ecuador to Florida. All I could remember was the sadness and stress my grandparents went through when my mom told them she wanted to move the United states for the future of her two daughters. They didn't take the news all so well since my mom just had moved from New York at the age of 20. But that did not stop my mom, but my dad refused to get on the plane until a week before the significant move. My dad was just being hard-headed since he didn't want to leave his diabetic dad behind. He had such a strong attachment to him; that was one the main problems for his refusal to move. He was also one of the best vets in our city, had lots of patients that needed their dogs to be taken care of. My dad had a good reputation for his labor. My mom on the other hand had some work experience but it had nothing to do with animals, she worked with importing and exporting items from a well known company. In the first couple of months we lived in my mother’s brother’s house, he opened his home for us which is

generous of him. We eventually moved into our own home and as the time went by I noticed my parents grew financially, which was wonderful to see this opportunity given to my parents. I didn't come from a country where objects were limited to their citizens or where freedom didn't exist, but I know for a fact that my parent's decision isn't one to regret. This opportunity of being in a free country reminds me of the cruel things Yeonmi’s mom went through to manage for her daughter’s freedom. Even if Yeonmi’s father couldn't do that for her because of the ill state he was in, but Yeonmi knew his father was involved in the black market in view of the fact that he had to bring an income to his family. It was heartbreaking to catch sight of a family split up all for the reason of being “free.” I had the privilege of having two loving parents that gave me what Yeonmi’s mom gave to her daughter: hope. This event applies to my college transition thanks to the support of my parents I wouldn't be where I am now. All throughout my schooling days my only goal was to get into a fitting college to receive the education I deserved, and now that I’m finally here I couldn't be more grateful to the two backbones in my life. My parents are the reason I strive so high, and when I do accomplish goals they are the first people I thank. They did everything for me in these 18 years and now I am doing everything for them. Numerous of people don't have that benefit of having someone there to guide them, which explains why my actions always involve some type of voluntary help. Yeonmi had backbones as well, three to be exact, sadly they were split up for plenty of years. Yeonmi lost her dad in all this chaos, but I’m sure that she came to realize that all this happened for one reason. That reason being, a new free life in another country where she could finally study and eat nutritional foods instead of being malnourished and uneducated. She got the privilege that was taken away from her when she was living in North Korea and China. Just as I

got the privilege to better my future in the Unites States. I haven’t experienced what Yeonmi went through but I know how it feels to have finally accomplished something that you yearn for....
