PROJECT 3: LIVE CONCERT REVIEW

For your third project in the semester, I want you to write a review of a live concert—one you already saw not too long ago or one you have yet to see. The artist or band does not have to be internationally famous; they can be local musicians performing in a club or other venue. However, you should be able to find some print or online sources about then (preferably concert reviews, but other articles or interviews are fine as well). Outstanding reviews have a central idea besides the writer’s judgment as to whether he/she liked the show or not. However, not all reviews have a central idea. Instead, writers talk about different aspects of the show and tie it in with their judgment of the show. And what are the aspects of a show reviewers write about? In your review, you should do some/most of the following:    

 

  

Before the Show: Catch the excitement in the audience before the performer comes onstage. If the venue is interesting, describe what it looks and feels like to be there. The audience: Did the crowd enjoy the performance? If yes, how do you know? What did they do to show their appreciation? The Start of the Show: Most stage shows attempt to start with a bang: Make your audience see/hear/experience the moment the show explodes on stage. The Songs: Most reviewers mention some of the songs played by the artist(s); make sure you download the set list so you remember their order. Do not go through the show song by song, however: Focus on the highlights either at the beginning or the end. The Stage: Describe the stage and some of the stage effects (lights, videos, props). The Dancers and Musicians in the Band: Describe some of the highlights of the musicians in the band, or some of the dancers in the show. Give credit to people besides the star fronting the band. The Stage Antics of the Star: Describe highlights of the front man/woman’s performance. Mishaps: Sometimes things go wrong in a show. Describe the “flubs” if you think they add something interesting to your piece. Background: While most reviews are written for people who know the artist(s) reviewed, some writers include some background information on the artist(s)’s careers or their latest productions.

Because you are learning how to write academic papers, your review must include three published sources, preferably reviews written by published writers. You can devote a paragraph to presenting what other writers have said about the as part of your introduction and then have your review agree or disagree with their assessment of the show and/or the artist(s)....
