Anh Tan Professor Slava Pruchenko Music Appreciation 1930 November 20th, 2017

On Sunday, November 12th, 2017 at 3 p.m., the Atlanta Guitar Orchestra conducted by Tim Haney and Mary Akerman, performed many famous pieces by various of popular composers. The performance was held at Cole Auditorium, Georgia Perimeter College, Clarkston Campus which was one of the most memorable concert that I have ever attended because of their amazing performance which has excellently recreated these masterpieces of music of art. The concert opened with a Concerto in D piece by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767), played by Olivia Stein and Doug Pike. This piece was performed by the violinists with 3 different tempos: Adagio-Allegro, Grave, and Allegro. The first tempo, Adagio-Allegro, opened the pieces with an "at ease" speed, not too fast, not too slow, led the audiences in the flux of it. The second tempo was much slower, Grave, slowly allowed the audiences to listen to it more carefully and enjoy every melody in it. The third tempo was much faster and brighter, the sound of string instruments helped lift up the audiences' emotions in high for the speed it took. Then the piece Si Bheag Si Mhor by Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738), it was arranged by Luc Levesque, shifted the audiences' mind into an Irish culture with an Irish tune attributed by Turlough O'Carolan, a blind singer and a harpist. The piece was also performed by Olivia Stein and Doug Pike at a slow tempo. In my opinion, through this piece, Olivia Stein and Doug Pike have successfully portrayed the Irish and their plight. It is very deliberated and beautiful when played with a violin, a string instrument, due to its air and slow format. However, it is a bit overwhelming with the vibrato, it would better if less vibrato was used. After this, came next was Y'hiyu L'ratzon by Bonia Shur (1923-2012). Bonia Shur was a Jewish composer, his creation of Y'hiyu L'ratzon is one of the most popular piece of all time. The piece was accompanied with a female vocal which is called aria, a solo vocal voice accompanied by instruments playing along which is often performed in operas. The performance was so beautiful when she successfully expressed and delivered all the emotional feeling to the audiences. Serenade, a piece created by Fernando Sor (1778-1839), a type of composition created to honor someone. In this case, this Serenade Op. 37 written by Fernando Sor was dedicated for Mlle S. Talbot in E major and with the tempo of Allegretto. Since it was written in the tempo of Allegretto, it is expected to be played in a fast pace but not as fast as the piece Concerto in D in Allegro. This piece of Fernando Sor is dedicated to be played by the family instrument of string instruments, guitar. Fernando Sor is a Spanish guitarist and composer, he is well-known for his works varied a wide range of different genre of music and covered a wide range of many traditional cultures of countries in the world. Even though this is the first time I have ever heard of his music, but it really left me an unforgettable impression because of its very moved melody. The second set was performed by Preston Snead and Tim Haney with one piece from Fernando Sor, Serenade, the other one was El Puerto, Traditional, arranged by Len Williams. El Puerto in Spanish means a mountain path, the melody of this piece is from northern mountain range in Spain. The arrangements of it were first published in 1956 by the Spanish Guitar Center.

This musical composition consisted of 11 pieces which are written for guitarists. Very melodious, the piece really moved my heart when hearing it. This piece of Len Williams is very peace when it was heard. With a soft dynamic, the melody when played by the performers slowly and softly led the audiences to the picture of wide range of mountains that they drew. The following set was performed by Rich Downdswell, Olivia Stein, and Doug Pike. The very first piece of this set of the three was Petit Suite No. 6 created by Alexander Borodin (18331887), it was arranged by Adrian Andrei. This piece of Alexander Borodin is the most major work that he dedicated for the play of piano. Petit Suite was created along with seven other pieces for dedicated for piano play. However, in this concert of Atlanta Guitar Orchestra, only three pieces were played: Serenade also called Dreaming of Love, Nocturn known as Lulled by the happiness of being in love, and Mazurca known as Thinking only of dancing. The first movement, Serenade – Dreaming of Love was played in Allegretto tempo which is fast with D flat major. The second movement, Nocturn – Lulled by the happiness of being in love, was played with the tempo of Andantino, which is fast but not as fast as Allegretto, the piece was set at G flat major. The last one, Mazurca – Thinking only of dancing, was played in Allegro tempo, which is faster than the last two tempos, even though it is designed to be played in a fast pace, but it still preserved the brightness in each of the notes that were performed. The coming next set was performed by Rich Downdswell and Olivia Stein. The piece was composed by Ian Seabourne and it was published in 2011 called Departure. Departure is a work dedicated for cello and guitar, string instruments. This piece has a quite soft dynamic and very emotional, it is about one's feeling when traveling by cruise when the cruise departs the port. The piece was first performed by Julia Ryder and Danny Ross. Next, a piece of Maximo Diego Pujol (1957) called Grises y Soles was performed by Doug Pike, Adam Frank, Tim Haney, and rich Downdswell. Maximo Diego Pujol is a famous guitarist and composer form Argentina. The Grises y Soles is written in Allegro tempo, which has a quite fast speed, like I mentioned above, even though it is designed for a fast pace speed, it does not make the notes be diluted but still preserves its brightness when the performers perform it. In this piece of Maximo Diego Pujol, he mixed between the tempo of Allegro and Andante tempo, which is best known for the speed of walking pace, not fast nor slow, a normal, understandable speed. The concert came to the end with the last set in the program which they would performed three more pieces: two were arranged by Bryan Johanson and the other one is from George Harrison (1943-2011), it was arranged by Joe Marks. The first one in this set was Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair, composed by Traditional and arranged by Bryan Johanson. This musical composition was arranged with the speed tempo of Adagio because it is quite slow and stable. It is an aria because it is a lyric song played with musical instrument and accompanied along with it is a vocal voice of a singer. The speed of the song was very slow and intense because its low pitch and tone.

The second one is also composed by Traditional and arranged by Bryan Johanson called Rye Whisky. This piece was dedicated for the play of guitar, a string instruments. Rye Whiskey is a traditional folk song in a slow speed. It is a very humorous song that was written. The last that concluded the concert was Here Comes the Sun composed by George Harrison (1943-2001) and arranged by Joe Marks. George Harrison was popular known as the lead guitarist in the famous band of The Beetles. Here Comes the Sun was written by him in The Beetles' album in 1969 called Abbey Road. The Atlanta Guitar Orchestra has successfully performed this famous song of the famous band of The Beetles. The piece was beautifully arranged by Joe Marks, very melodious, written in A major. In conclusion, it was a great concert performed by the Atlanta Guitar Orchestra. The conductors, Tim Haney and Mary Akerman, were amazing with their strong leadership in leading the concert. I am glad that I got to attend the concert. This is my very first time attending a musical concert at Clarkston and sure it will the most unforgettable concert experiences that I could have. The Atlanta Guitar Orchestra has an amazing and talented group member. They have successfully recreated and performed the most popular pieces composed by the most famous composer of all time. There is no doubt about the perfection of the concert and really had my heart in enjoying their music....
