New York Choral Society and Orchestra

Omar Ali MAY 14TH, 2018

Tuesday, May 8th, 2018 at 8pm in Manhattan, New York. In the Stern Auditorium /Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall. I had the honor to see New York Choral Society and Orchestra. This group featuring David Hayes who is not also the Music Director but as well the Conductor of this Orchestra with an unusually broad range of repertory, spanning the symphonic, oratorio/choral and operatic genres. Trained as a violinist and violist, Mr. Hayes received his Bachelor of Music in musicology from the University of Hartford and a diploma in Orchestral Conducting from the Curtis Institute of Music. Sarah Shafer, Soprano, A recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, Ms. Shafer’s credits for Curtis Opera Theatre include over 20 productions and a variety of roles. Abigail Fischer, Soprano, born in Norwich, Vermont to chamber musician parents who now teach at Rice University in Houston, Texas. James Reese, Tenor, James is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music, where he studied with Kurt R. Hansen, Alan Darling, and Donald Nally. He is a recent graduate of Yale University's Institute of Sacred Music, where he studied with James Taylor as part of the Yale Voxtet. Lee Poulis, Baritone, He is an alumnus of Washington National Opera’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program, San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program, Music Academy of the West, and Harvard University. They performed J.S. Bach's B Minor Mass. They used various of instruments as Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Oboe & Oboe D'amore, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Timpani and Organ. My first impression of the place was before I got there, on the website when purchasing the ticket, you have to pick your seats and they're rules attached to which seat you pick depending on the location of your seat. I knew that this venue itself is one to

dress up for (Formal attire). Therefore, when arrived I was right everyone was in suits and dresses. the type of people that were there for the most part were older people and there were some couples in the audience, but eithiceny wise, mostly white people. The event was well-attended, a sold-out show. The audience seemed to be familiar with the place, meaning it wasn't their first time there nor was it their first show. The audience seemed excited and into the show by the way they were anticipating the sounds. The venue was very nice-looking, with very professional, respectful and polite staff. The seating had limited leg room which was uncomfortable, but the view of the stage was pretty good. B Minor Mass had a very fast tempo in the beginning of the piece. The meter of the piece was an exclating rhythm with climaxes and then drops in the tempo. The timbre of B Minor Mass was all based on the quality of the musical voice which had the right pitches and intensities that while I was in the balcony I can really feel how intense the notes were. The Dynamics of the music was very loud, and it pops at you. The sound was definitely Legato, it had a smooth flowing manner but at the same time it was loud and projected very nicely. From Minor to Major it was Legato because it didn't have any breaks in between it. The phrases were pretty long, I timed about 5-6 minutes for phrases. No, I did not hear any motives, nor did I hear any repetition. The texture was mostly was thick, homophonic texture which is most common in western and classical music, as well as popular. Another Impressionist, 20th century piece, is one by Claude Debussy. AchilleClaude Debussy was born on August 22, 1862, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, the

oldest of five children. While his family had little money. Master of lush webs of sound and of subtle orchestration. His music loses itself in a scintillating haze o f colors and associations. "Beau Soir" is a French art song written when Debussy was 15 or 16 years young. Around 1877 when he wrote it his music was marked by the aesthetics of the period. Beau Soir was a little more than normal tempo at a 60/100 BPM on a metronome. This piece since it’s in the E Major it has more of a harmonic rhythm. Throughout this piece the music dims ever more increasing the voice, timbre being present. Throughout, B Minor Mass they sounded accurate and everything from transitions to pauses were on point. The y definitely played with emotions, you can tell when they were intoned with the music and you can tell when they were shaking from how intense they were playing. I think in my opinion they brought out the melodies more than enough, they should've had more of an instrument presents, I feel like the melodies were drown the instruments. They seemed to enjoy themselves with a standing ovation at the end of the show, their last show of the season. They had energy and you can tell the energy is present on stage b y how there were sync with one another on stage. The music did not feel rushed, it was smooth, and you can feel every note because their tempo was just right. The one I liked best would have to be B Minor Mass, because that piece caught my attention from the opening to the ending because of its tempo, rhythm and dynamics. It catches your attention, you want to know what is going to lead to and it leads to something compeletly different.

I would like to return to that venue for a musical or a concert, bu t not a 20th century music concert, more of a drake concert. I would like to see this group again playing more of a modern or late 20th century music....
