Concert Review: Today, the concert that I am reviewing is “Back to the Roots” by 2Cellos, located at the Lisinski Concert hall in Zagreb, Croatia. 2Cellos is a duo of composed of highly talented celloists, Luka Sulic, and Stjepan Hauser. These two gentlemen are accompanied by a supporting orchestra which consists of violin, viola, and other celloists, as well as one, standing double bass player. When the 2 cellos are combined with the rest of the orchestra, they all work together phenomenally to provide an audibly satisfying experience, while also maintaining a visually pleasing performance by utilizing changing lights as well as a large, colorful backdrop. The event in total was very well put together due to it having a primary focus on the music aspect (of course), but also there was a comedic focus on Stjepan and Luka, talking to the audience to keep them engaged in what they were doing as well as to encourage a couple chuckles in between movements. My favorite part of the event had to be their renditions of more modern popular music such as Smooth Criminal or With or Without You. My primary reason for enjoying those two pieces in particular is because those are pieces that I know the tune to and can really witness the talent possessed by these players to see how they were able to translate a pop song into an orchestral masterpiece. On the other hand, the only thing I suppose I can say that I did not enjoy was simply the fact that the concert was not in English, which I can’t say that I was surprised by given that it took place in Zagreb, Croatia. Despite the language barrier, the video was able to provide subtitles, so I was once again able to enjoy the entire performance, including when the gentlemen were cracking jokes. In the end, I believe that it was a rather good way to spend my afternoon watching and observing this concert. While it is not something that I have not experienced before, it is certainly something that I would not mind experiencing again. Cellos

have always been an interesting instrument to me, given that they are similar to the trombone, the instrument of my choice, so it was a no brainer for me to watch a concert involving cellos so that I can see the stringed version of my favorite instrument in action. It was clear that the concert was meticulously planned out and executed fairly flawlessly; at least to my eyes. There was a lot of emotion that was made highly visible throughout the performance not only in the voicing of the instruments but also in the body language and the movement possessed by the players themselves. I have never quite understood why string players moved so much when performing but when I watched this performance I was able to understand that it is their way of putting their soul and their emotion into the piece, creating an effect that can be felt by the audience. With that being said I personally can see myself listening and enjoying 2Cellos in my free time as they truly captivated my attention and have allowed me to appreciate a more modern approach to classical music....
