As an academic student it is essential to understand how to properly conduct research and compile data both efficiently and effectively. One of the best tools for research that has been around since ancient history, are libraries and books. However, with modern day technology and the creation of the World Wide Web, we are now able to integrate nearly every piece of information into a centralized database known as the internet. Through the internet, manually searching through countless of papers and books has become superseded by digital libraries and online collections. Digital libraries have significantly sped up the process of research as we are now able to find sources that are relevant quickly and effortlessly. Though with the abundance of sources available, one must know how to distinguish the differences between scholarly sources and popular sources as well as understanding appropriate use for each type. Popular sources are intended for the general public and they are often written for entertainment or informational pieces. They are much more informal in tone with less technical language as it is meant for a wider audience. They also do not typically include any formal citations and often written by journalists or professional writers. The most common type of popular sources are newspapers and magazines such as Time Magazine, National Geographic, and Forbes. Although a popular source may not be the most appropriate reference for an in-depth research paper, they can be utilized for finding general information about the topic. Scholarly resources are publications that are written by scholars or researchers with the purpose of presenting case studies or research data. This type of source often includes complex language and technical jargon that is specific to a field of study and more suited towards other researchers and academic students. In comparison to popular sources, scholarly sources go through a longer editorial process as they are peer reviewed by several other experts in the field as well as including extensive references and citations. Scholarly sources are essential for those

conducting research on a specific subject as they provide unbiased information and analyzes the topic in detail. The most effective and efficient process for finding sources for research data can be accomplished through online digital libraries such as the University of Arizona Global Campus Library. When conducting academic research, it is imperative to go through library databases as they provide access to scholarly publications unlike normal search engines that deliver low quality and often biased information. One of the essential things to remember when using the UAGC library or other databases is to avoid long sentences when searching for sources, rather condense your search terms by using keywords or short phrases. This will filter out most irrelevant content and provide the most accurate results related to the topic. Conducting research can be time consuming and strenuous, however, when using the right tools, the process can be streamlined and made efficient. Understanding the differences between types of resources and their purpose is also a key aspect as it is important to know which source is most appropriate to which content. Combining these skills and utilities will provide the most effective means that will satisfy our research needs.
