How to Install MyDAQ and Multisim Software on a Mac!

! There are two main ways to go about running the myDAQ and Multisim software on a mac:! ! !

I. Using the Mac OS Boot Camp application to run Microsoft Windows on a Mac Computer! II. Using Virtual Machine environments to run Windows on a Mac Computer!

This guide uses the Virtual Machine (VM) method, namely Virtual Box. If you would rather use Boot Camp I would suggest making a complete disk image backup of your hard drive before hand, and refer to Apple's documentation on Boot Camp. http://www.apple.com/support/ bootcamp/ !

0. Obtain a copy of Windows 7 with a valid product key. (free)! A. If you don't have a CADE login. Follow the instructions below! 1. Go to https://webhandin.eng.utah.edu/cade/! 2. Click on "I would like to Create An Account/Retrieve My Username."! 3. Enter your CIS login info and get a user name to login with.! 4. The password will be the same as your CIS login password.! B. Go to https://www.eng.utah.edu/dreamspark/ and login with your CADE login.! C. Click "Microsoft Windows 7"! D. Under "Microsoft Windows 7 Professional" click "Add To Cart"! E. Go through the checkout process and follow the download instructions. You don't need to buy the backup disc if you don't want to. The download is gonna take a while, and you should make note of your product key as shown on the receipt.!

1. Download Virtual Box.! Virtual Box is a free virtual machine provided by Oracle. Locate and click the download for Mac OSX, and a .dmg disk image file will start downloading.! https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads/!

2. Open the Disk Image.! ( If it doesn't automatically open after the download is finished, click on the VirtualBoxxxxxxxxxxx.dmg file in your downloads folder. )!

3. Install Virtual Box.! Double click the VirtualBox.pkg and follow the onscreen instructions to install.!

4. Set-up the Virtual Machine. (You'll need over 22 GB of free space for this next step)! A. Open the "VirtualBox" application and click the "New" button.! B. Give your virtual machine a name, and select the version of Windows you have.! C. The RAM recommended may change depending on your system, you may want to slightly increase it, but stay in the green part of the slider.! D. Choose "Create a virtual hard drive now" and click "Create"! E. By default "VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)" should be selected. Click "Continue"! F. Select "Dynamically allocated" and click "Continue"! G. On this screen you can change the location of the virtual hard drive and it's size. It's suggested that you keep the size above 22 GB. When done click "Create"! H. After that finishes. Double click on your new virtual hard drive in the left sidebar.!

It will ask for a disk to boot from. Click the folder icon. Browse and select the Windows 7 disk image you downloaded in step 0.! J. Click "Start"! K. If all went well Windows should start installing on your virtual machine. Just follow the onscreen instructions to install Windows. ! - If your cursor disappears try pressing the left "Command" key and/or try to move it off the virtual machine window.! - Don't worry about formatting during the Windows installation everything in the virtual machine is contained in the virtual hard drive file.!

5. Install Multisim and myDAQ drivers (This usually takes a long time)! A. Update Windows: Start menu -> All Programs -> Windows Update. Do this multiple times until there are no more updates.! B. If you have a your myDAQ and Disc, then...! 1. Insert the "NI myDAQ Software Suite 4.4" disc with your new Windows virtual machine open.! 2. In the menu bar of "VirtualBox VM" select Devices -> CD/DVD Devices -> Host Drive...! 3. Open up "My Computer" in the virtual machine.! 4. Open the myDAQ disk and open the "setup" file. Follow the on screen instructions to install Multisim and the myDAQ drivers.! C. If you don't have your myDAQ yet, then in your new Windows virtual machine...! 1. Go to https://lumen.ni.com/nicif/us/acadevallvdl/content.xhtml fill out the form and download the LabVIEW installer.! 2. Go to https://lumen.ni.com/nicif/us/academicevalmultisim/content.xhtml (login if needed) and download the Multisim and Ultiboard installer.! 3. Go to http://search.ni.com/nisearch/app/main/p/bot/no/ap/tech/lang/en/pg/1/sn/ catnav:du,ssnav:sup/q/elvismx/# and download the newest version of NI ELVISmx.! 4. Install all 3 downloads on the Windows virtual machine.!

D. After you have done B or C run the NI update manager Start menu -> All Programs -> National Instuments -> NI Update Service. In the top right of the update manager there should be a button to update the update manager. Click that button. Important! At this time do not check any of the updates to install.! E. After the update manager is updated check the two critical updates and install them.!

6. Install the VirtualBox Guest Addons! A. In the menu bar of "VirtualBox VM" select Devices -> Insert Guest Additions CD image...! B. Open up "Computer" from the start menu.! C. Double click the "VirtualBox Guest Additions" CD drive, and install the software.! D. Shutdown the virtual machine. Start menu -> shutdown!

7. Download and Install the VirtualBox Extensions! A. Go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads in your Mac OS! B. Download "Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack" by clicking "All supported platforms"! C. Once downloaded open the extension pack! D. Virtual Box will open. Confirm that you want to install the extension.!

8. Create a New User Group "vboxusers"! A. Open "System Preferences". Apple icon -> System Preferences...! B. Click "Accounts"! C. Click the lock in the lower left corner, and enter your password.! D. Click the "+" sign above the lock.! E. In the New Account: dropdown choose "Group".! F. In the Full Name: box enter "vboxusers" with out the quotes.! G. Click "Create Group" and close System Preferences!

9. Change the permissions! A. Open up the "Terminal" command prompt application! B. Enter the following commands. Replace with the path to the .vdi file. The easiest way to do that is to open up "VirutalBox" right click on your virtual machine in the left side bar and select "Show in Finder". Then click and drag the .vdi file into the terminal window. After the first command your will be asked for your computer password. (When typing the password no characters will be shown just type enter when your done typing your password.)!

10. Wrap It Up (myDAQ required)! A. Connect your myDAQ to the USB port on your computer.! B. Open up "VirutalBox"! C. Right click on your virtual machine in the left side bar. Select "Settings..."! D. Click the "Ports" tab. Then click the "USB" tab.! E. Check the box that says "Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller"! F. Then click the USB icon that has a little green plus on it.! G. Select "National Instruments NI myDAQ"! H. Click "OK" to exit out of the settings.! I. Start your virtual machine.! J. When it is ready select Devices -> USB Devices -> National Instruments NI myDAQ from the "VirtualBox VM" menu.! K. If all went as it should, after a few seconds the "NI ELVISmx Instrument Launcher" should pop up. You can then test your myDAQ as shown in the getting started instructions.! L. Celebrate your done!!
