Session 1 Two of the assessments in ISYS2061 – Business Plan and Website (worth 35% and 20%, respectively) – are based on an idea you come up with for a website-based online business. Before starting on these assessments you need to present your business idea to your tutor for approval. You do this in a small website that forms the first assessment for ISYS2061 – Business Idea (worth 5%). This assessment is due at the end of week 4 of semester. In developing a website for your Business Idea assessment you will learn a lot of the skills you will later use for the Website assessment, where you create a website for your online business. To construct the website that forms your first assessment you will need to do a number of things: 1. Read the Business Plan and Website assignment documents (see links in the Syllabus) 2. Complete Practical Sessions 1 and 2. These sessions develop the structure of the website you will submit 3. Come up with your business idea and briefly research 2 of your major competitors 4. Add the content to the website you developed in Practical Sessions 1 and 2. This content describes your business idea and competitors. 5. Submit your website. To create the website that forms the Business Idea assessment you will use the techniques available in Wix. Wix is a website creation platform. You access Wix for free through a browser. In it’s own words Wix claims that “We empower people like you to create your own online presence for free and exactly the way you want”. In Session 1 you will: • • • • • •

Be introduced to Wix Create a Wix account Create the home page of your Business Idea website Use some basic Wix skills to add some text, an image and a button to your home page Add a password to your home page Publish your home page to the Internet

Please note: If you have used a different system in previous subjects for making web pages then DO NOT USE IT!! We require you to use Wix in this subject. DO not find this out later! 1. An Overview of Wix We will begin this Session with an overview of Wix. Rather than uselessly re-inventing the wheel, we will often point you to the Wix Help Centre. For example, to gain an Overview of Wix go to https://support.wix.com/en/article/top-reasons-for-choosing-wix.

2. Creating a Wix Account Please note: A basic Wix account is free. Within the instructions from the Wix Help Centre you will sometimes be asked if you want to upgrade to a Premium Plan. Don’t do this or it will cost you money. All the capabilities you will need in ISYS2061 are available with the free account. To create an account on Wix you will be required to enter an email address. For this course this MUST be your RMIT student email address. To create a Wix account: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Go to www.wix.com Click Sign In at the top right of the page In the middle of the next page is the question “New to Wix? Sign Up”. Select Sign Up Enter your RMIT student email address twice Enter a password for your Wix account. Be sure to make arrangements so you can remember this password later in the semester. You will need your Wix account password to complete the Website assessment. Click Sign Up

You should now see your Wix user name at the top right of the page to indicate that you have successfully created your Wix account.

3. Creating a website To begin with we will create a website that contains only the home page of your Business Idea website. We want your home page to look something like this:

You will be able to choose your own colors for your home page. Follow these instructions: Click on the Create New Site button You will be asked “What kind of website do you want to create?”. Choose Other. You will be offered 2 choices for how you want to create your website. Choose the right hand option by pressing Choose a Template. As your home page is relatively simple we will create it from scratch rather than using one of Wix’s existing templates. You will be able to use a template for the online business Website you create later in the semester. By creating your Home page from scratch you will learn some of the features of the Wix page editor. You can then apply these features when you create your Business Idea and online business Websites. To create a web page from scratch, choose Blank Templates from the menu on the left of the screen. Then roll your mouse over the Start from Scratch template and choose Edit. Close any window offering you a Welcome to Wix video. Move your mouse pointer over the blank template and you will notice Wix creates Header, Page and Footer sections of the web page. We will put our content in the Page section. Save your website At some stage Wix will ask you to Save your website. I suggest you Save it now. Press the Save button at the top right of the window. The Wix Save window will appear.

Wix gives your website a free Domain name. This Domain name can later be typed in to a browser to view your website. Very Important – in your free Wix.com Domain Name change mysite to businessidea. Your Domain name for your home page will then be something like http://s9999999.wixsite.com/businessidea where s9999999 will be replaced by your own RMIT username. Press the Save & Continue button. In the Your Site was Saved window that appears press Done. Add a page background The first thing we want to do is add a background color to your home page. You will notice from the example of my home page above that we want the Header, Footer and areas to the side of the Page section to be a different color. To do this: Click on the Page section of your webpage Choose Change Page Background Select the Color button Select your background color Click back on your page. You can experiment with colors and backgrounds but make sure that any text that goes on your home page is easily visible against the background. Previewing what you have just done Save your changes. In the Your changes were saved window, press Done. Press the Preview button at the top right of the window to see what your home page will look like. Press the green Back to Editor button to return to the Wix editor and your home page. Add some text If you look back at the example home page earlier in this document you will see that we want to add the text ISYS2061 Internet for Business at the top of the Page section. Text is inserted in boxes. Start with the Wix Help Centre including the little video www.wix.com/support/html5/article/adding-text-6611676 Some additional information about text boxes: The boxes have handles and you can use your mouse to drag on these and change the shape of the box. If you click away from the box and then bring the cursor back onto the box you can move it around the page.

You can align the box on the page, for instance, centre it, by using the menu bar to the right of the screen. Add ISYS2061 Internet for Business to your Home page. And on a lower line add Business Idea, then your name and student ID. Use the Edit Text button to choose appropriate font types, sizes and colors.

Add an image You can add an image of yourself if you would like us to know what you look like. Otherwise any image will do. To put an Image on the page you will need to: • • •

Upload the image to your Wix image library www.wix.com/support/html5/article/uploading-your-own-images Place the Image on your page Do all sorts of things to the image by clicking on it and selecting from the options that appear above the image.

Add a button To add the Email button - https://support.wix.com/en/article/adding-and-linking-an-icon-button Password protecting your Website We want your home page to be password protected so that only people on the Internet that you have given the password to can view it. The password should be RMIT To password protect your website follow the instructions at www.wix.com/support/html5/article/password-protecting-your-site-or-a-specific-page 5. Publishing your Website At the moment your home page is only viewable by you inside Wix. To make your home page viewable on the Internet you need to Publish it. To publish your website press the Publish button at the far right, top of the window. A window congratulating you on publishing your website should appear. The Domain window should contain your Domain name, something like http://s9999999.wixsite.com/businessidea.

To view your published website press the View Site button. Test the password RMIT You could also view your published website by putting your Wix Domain name (in the form http://s9999999.wixsite.com/businessidea) in another window of your browser or in a different browser. You should Publish your website and view it on a regular basis. Very Important – don’t forget to Save your home page every time you make changes to it.
