This assessment task is designed to get you thinking about which criminological issues interest you most. The task requires students to identify a criminal justice issue of interest and write a short critical reflection on that issue by answering 4 set questions: 1)

What is the criminal justice issue you have chosen?

2)

What are the sources of your knowledge (policy report, academic journal article, media or news program etc.) about this issue?

3)

What solutions have been proposed to address the issue/problem?

4)

How likely is it that these solutions will be adopted? Why/why not? Are there particular barriers (such as resources, political buy-in, community support etc.)?

FAQs Can I choose any ‘issue’ or does it need to be aligned with one of the three Modules we are exploring in the unit? You can choose any ‘issue’ as long as it generally aligns with one of the three Modules (e.g. Module 1: Policing; Module 2: Prisons or Module 3: Drugs and Crime). Does the ‘issue’ I choose have to have an Australian focus? While many of the issues we explore in ACR201 will have an Australian or even Victorian focus, many will also have relevance overseas. As long as your chosen ‘issue’ aligns with the theme of one of the Modules, you are free to choose a local, national or internationally relevant ‘issue’. How many words do I need to allocate to each question? It is up to you how you allocate the words to each question as you see appropriate. How should I structure my response? As one long paragraph or as 4 discrete responses? You should answer each question separately. Do I need to provide references, and if so, how many? Yes, provide in-text references and a reference list as appropriate. Please follow the Deakin guide to Harvard referencing which can be accessed via this link on the library website https://www.deakin.edu.au/students/studying/studysupport/referencing/harvard Can my references include academic sources from overseas? Yes, we expect that some of your references are going to be drawing on issues that have international relevance and/or studies that have been conducted by researchers overseas and/or findings of research that has been published in international journals. Are the in-text references included in the word count? Yes.

Is the reference list included in the word count? No. Is there a rubric for this task? No because this task is only worth 10%. We wish you all the best with your assignment. Any questions, please post on the relevant assessment task discussion thread on CloudDeakin....
