Define intelligence:  A general all around ability  Ability to use knowledge to reason, make decisions, make sense of events, solve problems, understand complex ideas, learn quickly, and adapt to environmental challenges 2. What is an IQ? What does it test? Why has the IQ test been so enduring?  IQ is a score that represents a person’s all-purpose thinking skill  IQ test consists of sections that seem unconnected (abstract reasoning, vocabulary, general knowledge, memory, spatial ability) – if good at one section tend to be good at all sections and vice versa 3. What are some of the limitations of traditional IQ tests?  It makes up a small component of intelligence  Not broad enough  Looks at a lot of old knowledge  Does not tell you if a person will do anything productive in the world 4. What does Dr. Robert Sternberg propose about intelligence?  Creative and practical problem solving are part of intelligence 5. What is emotional intelligence (Dr. John Mayer)? What are some characteristics of those with high E-IQ?  Emotional intelligence is the ability to: o Understand what’s happening behind other people’s thoughts o Read people’s faces o Judge emotional undercurrents o Recognize own emotions  Characteristics of high E-IQ o Avoid problem relationships o Less likely to get into fights or arguments with other people o Likely to have a lot objects of attachment o Highly connected people o Able to tract social situations as they move and change 6. What does Dr. Howard Gardner propose? Why is his theory controversial?  Proposes a multiple intelligence theory, we have at least 8 relatively separate intelligences (linguistic, logical-mathematical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic)  Controversial because it is completely opposite to the IQ which assumes that we all have one general intelligence 7. Reflecting on the Battle of the Brains competition, what are your personal take-aways regarding intelligence or intelligence tests?  Intelligence is very difficult to measure and if measured there are many different ways to measure



Intelligence tests are not covering enough, a person’s intelligence is too big to be measured and should not only be measured on general thinking skill...
