Running head: INTERROGATION 1

INTERROGATION OF CAYDE LISH MATTHEW HEATON CENTRAL NEW MEXICO COMMUNITY COLLEGE

INTERROGATION 2 INTERROGATION OF CAYDE LISH The style of interrogation that the detective used while interviewing Cayde Lish was the sympathetic style and the face-saving style. Cayde did leave work to go to this interview to get the burden off of his chest. I noticed when the detective came in to the interrogation room he appeared to be in regular work clothes instead of a suit and tie or whatever else detectives wear, the detective did this because it show that he is not above the suspect and acting like they are both 2 normal guys that are talking about a situation that happened. The detective first made small talk beginning if the suspect lived here and then went onto reading the Miranda warnings so he can ask about the situation that occurred. STYLE The detective used the sympathetic style approach while integrating Cayde because the detective is speaking in a low tone and expresses emotion and concern for the suspect. The investigator also allows the suspect to blame others for his action when the investigator knows that’s not the truth, allowing the suspect to have further relief of guilt because he is cooperating with the investigator. The detective also used a face-saving approach because the investigator gave the suspect a way out that by confessing or admission of his participation in the situation. He attempts to rationalize with the suspect by showing that his consequences as natural actions that a normal person would do given that situation, while allowing the suspect to talk about all of his actions. Periodically the investigator chimes in and asks important questions that the investigator must understand to know his involvement while connecting the whole story together asking key points that the suspect missed. The investigator in this does not write anything down and remains in complete eye contact, also having open body language.

INTERROGATION 3

SETTING The setting of the interrogation room is very important for many reasons. The key to questioning a suspect is having privacy, which allows him or her to feel comfortable while unloading the burden of guilt. The surroundings in the room allows to reduce fear and encourage the suspect to discuss their role in the crime. I like the room that Cayde is being questioned in because it reflects a businesslike atmosphere instead of a police officer like environment. There are also no obstacles that are blocking the investigator from seeing the suspects body language. The desk is clean with no distractions, no paper or pencil and it’s a simple room that you might go get interviewed in for a job. A few things I would change about the room would be taking out the 2 above the clock, take out the one chair that is not being used and put in 2 comfortable chairs for the suspect and the investigator allowing both of them to be more relaxed. LEGAL This interrogation is completely legal because Cayde is not forced to come to this, he voluntarily took off work to get this burden of his chest. Cayde was not under any type of duress or coercion while the interrogation because he openly admitting his part in the situation because the investigator used good tactics. Before being questioned about his part in the crime, the investigator advised him of all of his Miranda warnings and asking if he understood after every single line....
