Introduction Death of Magellan The Famous Navigator Fernão de Magalhães or widely known as Ferdinand Magellan is actually a Portuguese but sailed in behalf of Spain. He was born into a family of small Portuguese aristocracy in Sabrosa, Portugal and his brother Diogo traveled to Lisbon as pages at Queen Leonora's court when they were 12 years old. Magellan was exposed to stories of the great Portuguese and Spanish competition for maritime exploration and control of the spice trade in the East Indies, particularly the Spice Islands, or Moluccas, in modern-day Indonesia, while at the court. In those early years, Magellan was enthralled by the prospect of fame and fortune, and he became interested in marine exploration. On his voyage, he accidentally discovered the Philippines as he landed on Homonhon. However, Magellan was killed with a poison arrow during the Battle of Mactan, but his ambitious expedition demonstrated that the globe could be circumnavigated by sea and that the planet was far larger than previously thought....
