Katherine Carcamo October 7, 2018 Professor Koegler PHI2010 Is the Good Life an Ethical Life? There are many philosophical issues that we all encounter on a day to day basis. One of the most fundamental is the question whether if a good life means an ethical one. Given the informative lectures and multiple readings, we can assume there is many explanations defining the dimensions of ethics and the overall term of “good”. Initially, there is a reflective orientation in our lives that define the whole project of philosophical ethics. Primarily, we can distinguish and articulate aspects of our existence. Secondly, we view our accomplishments and successful endeavors as something intrinsically valuable. For example, if someone graduates from college, it’s a good accomplishment in many factors, and very useful for one’s career. It is applied at their job and their own insight to learn from certain situations. The third thing is that we use these reflections to improve effectively how we live and change certain circumstances. These are the basic conditions that allow us pin point of a philosophical ethic. Moreover, ethical orientation is also presenting by being absolutely rational and philosophical. It also includes the diversity of moral and ethical point of views. In order to orient our intentions and actions, they’re based on the principle to which the intent and act can be judged to be good. By definition, the act of being good is compared to the value-orientation and the outcome of your intentions that upon us would significantly define as desirable.

Aristotle clearly divided of knowledge that constitutes the three broad domains, Critique of Plato’s Theory of Ideas, the Three Types of Knowledge, and Aristotle’s Conception of Virtue Ethics. Aristotle strongly explained that the term “good” cannot be universal since it’s subdivided into a quality, or a substance. Also, the word “good” is also used in many meanings. For example, a good meal is contrastingly different from a good idea, a good person, a good laptop, or even a good feeling. Therefore, we then define that within each species or realm, something can be more or less “good”. Ethical knowledge is socially acquired that exemplifies our virtues as cognitive capabilities that allow us to live a good life. However, rationality is as important for defining the “good” life. It also constitutes to someone being rational in order to achieve that good, above all the goods, there is the highest good. The highest Good is represented by a preliminary or instrument good, or a means to something else. It also has to self-sufficient, it’s only sake. Therefore, the highest good can be defined as happiness since it all ends seem to cultivate in the goals or actions achieved in our lives. This pleasure of happiness can also be defined by the ethical theory of epicureanism. Epicureanism is presented as the materialistic philosophy of nature and the world. To achieve happiness, you have to orient yourself through natural needs and avoid artificial desires. A life with a connection to nature and within our human nature, can merely bring us happiness. Additionally, happiness cannot be derived from pleasure since a pleasant state of mind is an interference with the body and mind. All in all, Aristotle simply claims our good life means that we have to be a good citizen which is virtuous. It generally means that it is the standards of your society that defines what makes your actions identified as good. The good life instead consists in the realization of your place in the world with balance of human nature and reality.

Overall, the reason why a good life constitutes an ethical life is because it evaluates us as human beings through the dimensions of being rational, and seeking happiness through our personal human nature authentically. Words 620...
