ITEC 3100 – Introduction to Networks Professor: Dr. Binh Tran Lab 1b: (Use a different color font for your written answers) Q1. What are the speed ranges for the 3 types of harddrives? Mechanical: 50 MB/s – 150 MB/s SSD: 300 MB/S - 575 MB/S M.2 drives: 1500 MB/S -3800 MB/A Q2. If the M.2 NvME drive is so fast why is it not recommended on all systems? It’s new technology so not all motherboards have M.2 slots & support NVMe technology. Q3. Explain the difference between an IP address and a MAC address. MAC address and IP address are used to uniquely identify a machine on the internet. MAC address is provided by the chip maker. MAC address ensures the physical address of the computer. It identifies the devices on a network. MAC address can’t be changed or easily found by third party. IP address is provided by the internet service provider. IP address identifies the connection of network with that device take part in a network. 1

Q4. Explain what the difference between a LAN and WAN. Local Area Network (LAN): is a network confined to one building or site i.e., office or home.  Geographically small  Use cables or low-power radio wireless connection Wide Area Network (WAN): is a network that extends over a large geographical area i.e., country continent, internet  Largest type of network  Include multiple LANs, MANs, CANs Q5. List different types of Servers and what is the most important type of Server? Why?  Domain Controller/Authentication Server o Most important (checks to see if a valid user)  File and print  Application Servers  Communication servers  Email/ Fax  Web Servers Q6. Why are Servers needed? A server is a computer that serves information to other computers (“clients”). Servers provide client a central file

storage area, sharing hardware, control who has access to the network and sharing internet connections. (share data) Q7. Why do we use networks and how is that related to the “Cloud”? We use networks to connect to other devices that are connected together for sharing information and resources. I.e. file sharing, printers, internet connection, email, video conference and etc. Cloud-based networking : gives user access to networking resources through a third-party provider operating interconnected servers. Using Wide Area Network (WAN) or other internet-based technology, it helps distribute content quickly and securely. Q8. Insert screenshot of your HDD test speed here:

Q9. What are the system recommendations for an IT student for a new laptop? (CPU, RAM, HDD type). 4

CPU – i7 RAM – 8GB minimum HDD type: SSD Q10. What is ipconfig /all and what is ping? Ipconfig and ping are used to analyze, test, troubleshoot, and configure IPv4 and IPv6 connections. ipconfig and ping commands are the two most commonly used commands when analyzing and troubleshooting networking issues. Ping is used to test connectivity to other hosts.
