ITNE1001 NETWORK ARCHITECTURE
Activity 8
ITNE1001 Network Architecture
Read the given notes and instructions
Packet Tracer Software
Packet Tracer is a simulation software developed by Cisco which helps to create virtual networks and test them with different configurations. Packet Tracer is a useful tool to understand different networking concepts as it can be used to design networks by connecting various networking devices and running various troubleshooting tests to check the connectivity and communication between different devices. As it is much expensive to buy various networking equipment while learning networking, Packet Tracer becomes a much useful tool in learning networking architecture. There are other network simulation tools as well, including ns, OPNET, NetSim and GNS3.

Switch: Allocates traffic from one network segment to intended destinations which connect the segment to another network segment. Unlike a hub, a switch splits the network traffic and sends it to different destinations rather than to all systems on the network. It works on link layer of the TCP/IP model.
Network 1
Hub: The hub repeats all messages it receives to all connected nodes, and these nodes filter out only the messages that are intended for them. It works on link layer of the TCP/IP model. Bridge: A large network can be divided into multiple parts which are called segments. Nodes on different segments cannot directly communicate with each other. To make this possible, a bridge is added between the segments. It works on link layer of the TCP/IP model.
Network 2
Router: Determines the next network point to which it can forward a data packet towards the ultimate destination of the packet. Unlike a gateway, it cannot interface different protocols. It works on the Internet layer of the TCP/IP model.

Network 3
Gateway: Functions same as a router, but this device is capable of translating between one network system or protocol and another which a router is not capable. It works on the Internet layer of the TCP/IP model. Repeater: a device which amplifies or regenerates digital signals received while sending them from one part of a network into another. It works on the link/physical layer of the TCP/IP model.
Activity 1. Open the packet tracer software interface and get familiar with it using the help menu 2. Place three node PCs and one laptop within the work area 3. Connect them using a hub (hub 1). What is the suitable connection type? LAN connection with Ethernet 4. Similarly, connect another three PCs nodes using a switch (switch 1) on the same workspace 5. Is it possible to connect the hub 1 to switch 1? yes Connect the two network segments using minimum resources and call it ‘Subnet 1’ 6. Now, create a different ‘Subnet 2’ by connecting 3 PCs to another switch (switch 2) 7. Now you are asked to connect these two subnets by connecting switch 1 and switch 2 using a suitable network device. Confirm from your selection by asking the instructor 8. It is required to assign IP addresses to these devices in order to enable networking among them. Assign suitable IP addresses to each device of your choice. To assign IP address click on the network device and go to the ‘config’ tab. Then click the Copyright

‘FastEthernet’ button under ‘Interface’ to get the IP config wizard as shown below
9. Now try to communicate with different nodes using the ‘ping’ command Commands can be typed on the ‘command prompt’ obtained by clicking the object and then selecting the ‘Desktop’ tab.
