Description of Skill This is the act of starting an intravenous therapy such as medication administration, blood administration, etc.
Indications This procedure is indicated, when a client is in need of large infusions of medications, supplemental fluid, fluid replacement, electrolytes or nutrients.
Outcomes/Evaluation The IV therapy will be inserted into the venous system allowing for a catheter to infuse which ever medication/ fluid the provider deems appropriate.

CONSIDERATIONS
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Pre:Appropriate supplies, correct catheter size selection, appropriate provider orders Intra: Tourniquet application, selection of a venous site, clean area of insertion, insertion of catheter and stabilization, Documentation of IV site. Post: Maintaining patency of IV access and Discontinuation of IV therapy.
Client Education Educate regarding the procedure to be performed, the type of medications or fluids to be infused. Educate on the equipment you will be using to assist you.
Nursing Interventions Changing IV every 72 hours or sooner dependent on facility policy, Practicing of surgical aseptic technique. Practicing Needlestick Safety.
