The Evolution of Democracy in the Early Republic

As people came to America from all over the world a lot of change was brought by that. Many different cultures, races, ethnicities, backgrounds, and dreams. As more people came more developments came to light, the people built America up by their hands for the people of a united nation. With any strong country comes strong leadership and that is something in which was being found every step of the way. Two eras that drastically made a difference for America was the Jeffersonian era, with Thomas Jefferson, and the Jacksonian era; with Andrew Jackson, these both created important changes and lay the foundation for the future development of the U.S. During the era of Thomas Jefferson, from 1801-1809, Jefferson was the “founder of the Democratic Republican party, was by any definition an aristocrat, a thinker, a philosopher, a man who abhorred violence” (americanhistory.net). Jefferson proved that there could be a peaceful transition of houses. It went from the Federalists to the Republicans with peace and justice, not violence and obstruction and this is something that Jefferson attempted to make very clear. Jefferson pressed safety and revolution within every statement and hearing he made, in one of his statements he said “If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it” (Jefferson, 1806). Jefferson and

Jackson both shared liberalists political views but Jefferson was viewed as an elitist and Jackson was seen as a commoner. Jefferson pushed more government which ultimately leads to less freedom for man and Jackson was aiming to reshape the republic for the common man to succeed not just the elite. Andrew Jackson was known as the “Peoples President” (biography.com). He was the founder of the Democratic party and fought for individual liberty. Jackson also started the movement of the “Age of the Common Man” he wanted through the democracy that he was creating that each individual should have an equal start in life, rather than in Jefferson’s views the elite always won. Jackson wanted to protect the people from the Congress and their decisions and that he did. These changes that happened back to back were so important and crucial for America because it brought two completely opposing sides into power right after each other. It was the true split of the Democratic and Republican houses and started the revolution of the elite vs commoner. Jefferson was all about more government and the safety that the country is in if there are more boundaries with government and Jackson fought for individual liberty and all men were born with an equal start in life. Both of these era’s created radical change for the American government, culture, and foundation and development of the future for the United States.
