Module 1 – Setting up jamovi Introduction By now, you will be aware that calculating even simple descriptive statistics such as the standard deviation and mean can be tedious when there are more than a few observations or when the scores are not round numbers. jamovi is a statistical program that frees you from the drudgery of calculating descriptive statistics and inferential test statistics by hand. You will learn how to use jamovi in the HPS201/HPS771 seminars. You will be shown how to implement a range of statistical analyses in jamovi. We emphasise individual practice with jamovi because it has been our experience that these skills cannot be learned second-hand by watching someone else using the program, but by gaining the experience yourselves (imagine learning to drive, but you’re only ever allowed to sit in the passenger side). We hope that you will take up the challenge and try to develop a good understanding of statistics through jamovi. Downloading and Installing jamovi jamovi is freely available under the AGPL3 license, making it free to use for any purpose. To download and install jamovi, please go to www.jamovi.org and click on the download tab. Download and install the latest release that corresponds to your operating system. We will also show you how to download and install jamovi in your first seminar. Introduction to jamovi In this first class you will learn how to create a data file using jamovi and in particular, how to define and label different types of variables. Objectives:  Create a data file in jamovi  Save this file to your work disk  Check that the file was saved to your work disk  Load this file back into jamovi, change the file and re-save it Once the jamovi window is open you will see a window that looks something like that shown below. You will notice that jamovi presents you with a table made up of a series of rows and columns. Each box in the table is surrounded by a black line. These boxes are called “cells”. Also note that jamovi has two tabs that you can toggle between. Work from the ‘Data’ tab when you would like to create new variables and/or modify existing variables. Work from the ‘Analyses’ tab when you would like to analyse your data.

The cells in the jamovi worksheet are set up to store data. The columns labelled A, B and C are designed to contain data for variables (e.g., scores on an IQ test, age weight, height, etc.) or anything about the participants in the research that varies. The rows contain information about different participants (also called cases because the numbers in rows need not refer to single human participants, it could refer to variables measured in individual rats, or in a group of participants). If the rows contain data for individual human participants, the numbers in Row 1 of Column 1 contain the IQ score of Person 1, the numbers in Row 2 of Column 1 contain the IQ scores of Person 2, Row 3 of Column 1 those for Person 3, and so on. This illustrates a very important general rule in jamovi, information in rows refers to the data for different participants (or cases) while information in columns refers to different variables measured for these cases. In each row the different columns are variables indicating repeated measurements made on the same subject, while for different rows, numbers in the same column reflect the values on the variable for different participants (or cases). Technically, this is known as a “wide” data format1. Setting Up a jamovi Data File The cell that is "active" (i.e., ready to have data entered or modified) is highlighted as blue in the picture above (Column 1, Row 1). If a block of cells is "active" the whole block of cells will also be blue. To change the active cell, you can either use the mouse, clicking on the cell you wish to make the active cell, or you may use the keyboard arrow keys. 1 The other type of commonly used data format is known as a “long” format. Although we don’t cover the different formats in this unit, there are situations where using one format has advantages over the other.
