Jazz Writing Assignment The blues are characterized by a “Blues Scale,” which claims African origins, though not quite proven. Non-western cultures have pitches outside the twelve common notes of most Western music. The expression of these pitches creates the blues feel, especially when the pitches are combined with the third and seventh scale degree. The blues use a standardized harmonic plan, often 12-bar blues. The chord producing instrument (piano or guitar) lock onto the harmonies. Lyrics often describe relationships, usually suggestively.
