Description

1. There appears to be some hope for Jeff, this time through prom. How? What is the outcome of this event, and what does it suggest about Jeff? What is the author's purpose in including this event in the story? Prom to Jeff started to feel like a sense of normal to him. He had a date to the prom even though the girl didn’t even know him. The author’s purpose in this event is that Jeff tries to do normal teenage things but he feels too far gone to. 2. Explain the contrasts shown in the four panels on page 162 and the following splash page (163). What is the tone? How do you know? The tone is very full of excitement for their adventure to college. The boys are excited about taking their next steps in life and going to college. 3. The theme of adults not taking responsibility is a powerful on throughout this book. How does the scene with Jeff and his mother reinforce Derf’s question earlier in the book, at the bottom of page 67? How does this support this theme? Jeffery was afraid of being alone. When his mother said she and his father were getting a divorce and that she was moving back to Wisoncsin, it was a lot for Jefferey to comprehend at once when he was trying to explain how he needed them. 4. Late June 1978 was a major turning point in Derf’s life. How? How do Derf’s recollections of Jeff at this point reflect the title of Part 5? Explain how this does/does not support the theme of isolation or friendship. All of Jeff’s friends had gone away to college. Jeff killed a hitchhiker in late June. His whole life completely turned around that day. He felt alone and not having any of his friends around him

made him change as a person. 5. Summarize the discussion at the Arabica coffee house in 1988, including the ironic way this scene ends (pages 196-199). The discussion in the Arabica coffee house was about them discussing Jeffery Dahmer.
