Criminal Behavior Fall 2017 - Robinson Criminal Profile of Jeffrey Dahmer

Smith 2

Physical Description of the Perpetrator Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer, nickname Jeff, was also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal. He was a white male. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 21st, 1960. He was 6 foot, with an average build of 180 pounds. He had short, light brown hair and large wire glasses. His hair was wavy/straight. He had unshaven facial hair scruff and a mustache. His complexion was light/medium skin tone. His general appearance was casual, and his apartment had an unusual odor. On July 22, 1991 he was arrested at the of age 31. His demeanor at arrest was at first calm, but he soon grew angry and started to fight; however he was unsuccessful (“Jeffrey Dahmer - Serial”).

M.O. and Crime Scene Information Jeffrey Dahmer drank alcohol on the premises, concealed evidence, injured the victim, sexually assaulted the victim, took animals, tortured the victim, prepared for the crime before committing it, and the victim died from the injuries. The location of the crime scenes were residential, in the community, and outdoors. Dahmer took photos of dismembered bodies. Investigators found a 57 gallon drum and freezer that contained a torso and other body parts. Many severed heads, skulls, human torsos, and hands were found in his apartment. Investigators collected drops of blood in the tray at the bottom of the refrigerator. He used weapons to do his killing and dismemberment of the bodies. His victims were all male (“Jeffrey Dahmer - Serial”). His first victim was Steven Hicks, aged 19 and white. Dahmer killed Hicks at Dahmer’s house. His next victim was white

Smith 3 Steven Tuomi (24), who he killed at a hotel. He killed black Jamie Ooctator (14), white Richard Guerrero (14), and black Anthony Sears (25) at Dahmer’s grandmother's house. He killed black Raymond Smith (33), Eddie Smith (27), Ernest Miller (22), David Thomas (23), Curtis Straughter (19), Errol Lindsey (19), and Tony Hughes (31) at Dahmer’s apartment. He also killed Konerak Sinthasomphone (14), Matt Turner (20), Jeremiah Weinberger (23), Lacy Oliver (23), Joseph Bradehoft (25), and victimized but did not kill Tracy Edwards (32) also at his apartment. He did not have many witnesses, one few males testified in court that they had been drugged and sexually assaulted by Dahmer. However, these individuals had been lucky enough to escape. The two police officers that were flagged down by Tracy Edwards, Robert Rauth and Rolf Mueller, were the police officers who arrested Dahmer. In general, Jeffrey Dahmer targeted mostly black younger males. The victims were mostly random and picked up at a bar. He asked them to perform sexual activities for him. Almost all of his murders included necrophilia, cannibalism, and preservation of dismembered body parts (“Jeffrey Dahmer” Wikipedia) .

Case Summaries Jeffrey Dahmer planned his crimes. He seeked out males at the bars. He would lure them to his home by promising money or sex. He would then give them alcohol that was laced with drugs. His murders were not gruesome, he would strangle his victims to death. What was gruesome was the aftermath. He would often engage in more sexual activity with the dead bodies. Finally he would dismember and preserve the victim’s body parts. Along with the preservation, he would take pictures of his victims at various stages of

Smith 4 dismemberment. He performed this at various crime scenes: his very own home, a hotel, his grandmother’s house, and his apartment. At his house and his grandmother’s house he buried his victims. At his apartment he preserved and painted skulls and skeletons. He also preserved body parts and torsos in a large 57 gallon drum and freezer. He killed his victims the same way: by strangling them. He later used weapons to dismember the body and took photographs during this so the serial killer could easily relive that moment. These actions gave him a sexual thrill. There were not any police investigations seeking out Jeffrey Dahmer. It was difficult at first for the police to catch him because he was very convincing and portrayed himself in a way to the public that he was not a threat. It was not until his victim Tracy Edwards had escaped and flagged down two police officers that he was caught and arrested. Tracy Edwards had relayed the idea that Dahmer was a threat to him and told him that he had a long knife under his bed. The police found the knife arrested the individual. They later found several skeletons, severed heads and hands, and preserved toros (“Jeffrey Dahmer - Serial”).

Psychological Profile Suspect Bio Jeffrey Dahmer was an energetic and happy child until age 4. He had a surgery at this age and his personality noticeable changed after this. He became quiet and withdrawn. As a child he liked to investigate dead animals and carcuses. His family frequently moved and as a result, he did not have many friends, and was depressed. His parents divorced in his teens, which might have been a traumatic

Smith 5 event that sparked his criminal behavior. He had become an alcoholic and his first murder did not occur until after graduating high school. Dahmer had been arrested two times before he was arrested for murder. The first time was for indecent exposure and the second time was when he was accused of masturbating in front of two boys (“Jeffrey Dahmer” Biography.com) . Suspect Personality Dahmer’s personality at first was very happy when he was young but that quickly changed. He soon became alone and an outcast. He turned to alcohol to solve his problems and the divorce of his parents only increased the stressor. He was gay and very interested in the dead. After arrest he said to the police officers “For what is did I should be dead” (“Jeffrey Dahmer” Wikipedia) . Here he shows remorse for his actions. In his trial he pleaded insane. Categorization Dahmer’s motivation was organized. He knew what he was doing, his childhood contained many stressors and included the use of alcohol. Jeffrey Dahmer was a serial killer because he by definition committed “at least three murders over more than a month with an emotional cooling off period between each” (Brogaard). In relation to the victim, Jeffrey Dahmer performed adult sexual abuse and his targets were individual random victims. He definitely had a social influence of stress and had to have some kind of mental illness to want to commit these murders; however, he was never deemed insane. His crimes were acts of thrill and power. After he was arrested and taken to trial, the jury found him sane and he

Smith 6 was initially sentenced to 15 life terms in prison, an additional term was later added. He died in 1994, where he was beaten to death by an inmate (“Jeffrey Dahmer” Wikipedia) .

This case is gruesome and disgusting. It is hard to understand how anyone can kill anyone, especially multiple people. The killing was bad enough but his actions after the murders are very disturbing. Dahmer was very specific with the ways in which he committed his murders and received a sexual thrill from it. He even took pictures of the dismembered bodies so he would be able to relive it, which is very disturbing. He obviously must have had to have some mental issue, but he definitely was no insane. Even though it is true any sane person would not kill this many people, it is that care that he took with her victim that proves his sanity. He followed a very specific routine, something an insane person would not. In my opinion, he would have been sentenced to 15 counts of first degree murder and should have been sentenced to death as a result of his actions.
