Taylor Adolff WRT 104 - Profile A Sister That Should Be Known By All One of the most outstanding speeches I have ever heard was in October of my freshman year in college. It was our usual ‘weekly sorority chapter meeting,’ which was held every Monday at 8:30 p.m., but this meeting was a little bit different than usual. We were holding special elections for council positions, so we all had to listen to a countless amount of speeches to see who we wanted to elect as our next council members. Seeing all of the girls present their speeches to the chapter showed me how nerve wracking it really can be when you step up there in front of 180 girls and try to get them to vote for you. Out of all, there was one girl who really stood out to me. When she delivered her speech she did not seem to be nervous at all. She was calm, and showed everyone that she was completely ready. Up next was our election of the most important position on council, Theta Theta’s Chapter President. There was only one sister running for this position, so she would be the girl to win if enough sisters voted for her. Towards the end of her speech when we were all about to vote, I could see so many smiling faces, could hear such loud laughter and cheering, and could just feel the positive energy circling throughout the entire room. Hearing, “All in favor of Shannon as Theta Theta’s new Chapter President raise your hand please,” and instantly seeing every hand in the room shoot up sent chills throughout my body. Even though so much was occurring at once, my attention was only directed towards one person, and that person was Shannon Reahl. Try to imagine the biggest smile you have ever seen, and then multiply that smile by twelve. Shannon always lights up the room with her huge, kind welcomings, and never fails to make anyones day a little bit brighter. This is the smile that Shannon has on her face on a daily basis, no matter what kind of mood she is in, and no matter the person she is dealing with. Shannon had just been elected the new

president of the Theta Theta Kappa Delta chapter at the University of Rhode Island, for the 2016 - 2017 school year, and by the look of her face, we were all able to tell that she was pretty excited. There has never been a time where I haven’t been greeted by Shannon with the most genuine “hello,” and the biggest hug. She has always made me feel loved, as a true sister should, and is always able to make me smile no matter how rough of a day I have had. Shannon is definitely one of the most influential people who I have ever met, and since I have only known her for a short amount of time, that is definitely saying a lot. There is never a time where Shannon isn’t running for a new position in Kappa Delta, or meeting and exceeding her community service requirements. Shannon has held a numerous amount of positions throughout our sorority including Formal Chair and Assistant Vice President of Finance. She has been elected to serve on Kappa Delta Council twice, and is always looking for new ways to get herself even further involved on campus, whether it be in Kappa Delta or outside of Kappa Delta. With Shannon being my G-big, it has really helped me to get to know her better, and know how sweet and kind hearted she really is. She has so many connections, not only in the Greek community on campus, but with the entire campus as a whole. Just knowing her for the short amount of time that I have, and even being in the same environment as her, has really opened up my eyes, and truly has made me a better person in my opinion. Being able to observe Shannon at our weekly chapter meetings has really helped me to understand how much of an impact she has really had on our chapter. I have never heard one person speak a bad word about Shannon, and I don’t think that I ever will. She is genuinely kind hearted and most definitely has a good head on her shoulders. She is one that always tries to lead by example, but when she thinks her opinion needs to be voiced, she will do so in the most respective manner that you could

imagine, and tries to get the matter handled with accordingly. She is always open to new ideas that would make not only our sorority stronger, but the whole greek community here at URI stronger. There has never been a time where she has said “no” to an idea that someone put forward, because she knows how intimidating it can be to throw out ideas at a bunch of girls who are several years older than you, asking for their opinion. This being said, whenever I have any questions, or just need to go to someone for advice, I know that Shannon will always be there for me, and will always be able to come up with good ideas that can help me out. Meeting Shannon and letting her introduce me to Greek life here at URI has definitely made a positive impact on my life and has made me a stronger and happier individual. Shannon was the first girl to come to my mind the second that I thought of someone who I wanted to introduce to other individuals who are incoming freshmen here on campus. She has so many connections throughout her involvement with different business clubs and organizations on campus, that she would most definitely be able to help people look for jobs, internships, and just simple ways to get involved on campus. Shannon really has opened up my eyes to certain things around this campus, and I am so grateful to have had the privilege of getting to meet and work with her for the duration of this year, I really hope I will be able to step up to the plate for others as she has been able to do for me.
